I am towing with a 2007 power stroke and I rarely use the tow mode. In fact I have only used it when in the mountains were I need the power and the engine braking. The mechanic at the dealership I bought from said as long as the transmission isn't searching/shifting frequently and the temperature is in the normal range you don't need the tow mode. Now I am only towing about 9000 lbs. Maybe close to capacity you need it, not sure.

Thanks,
Mike

I have a 2001 Power Stroke, 2nd gear went out around 45K miles. Dealer rebuilt. Now 75K miles and tranny fine. I tow a 12K lb 5er. Dealer told me to not take truck out of OD unless tranny was searching. I get around 12 MPG towing.
