What do you guys do for stripped out screws in the exterior door panel? The part screwed on the bottom of the exterior door that is used to hold the door open has the two lower screws stripped out on my TT door. The door is a fiberglass panel filled with foam then a metal inside panel so I was thinking about drilling all the way through and putting a backing piece all the way across the interior part of the door for holding power. Anyone have a easier and/or better way??

thanks
Bill

Lots of solutions..your idea is a good one. Also you can pound a small dia. dowel or a couple of wood tooth picks in the hole...maybe soak them with some glue and then try to run the screw back in. It should hold.
If you want to get fancy, you can try this stuff.

Filler for stripped fasteners.

Larger screws to tap into the material.
Or take the piece off and raise it about 3/8" so the screws will go into new metal.

I would vote for oversized screws.

I usually bond an aluminum plate to the door, and screw to that.

Easier to run new drillpoint metal screws near the stripped ones.

I have had good luck with plastic screw anchors. Drill the hole for the proper size anchor, fill the hole with sealant, push in the anchor. Install the screw before the sealant dries.

Another option is to use "Nutserts" which essentially are rivets with threads inside. Drill out the hole, install the Nutsert and you have new threads to work with. Back space may be the only problem. They are great for installing mirrors on truck doors or anyplace you need a good, solid mounting on a sheetmetal surface..

Thanks for all the input, I think I will try one of the suggestions before resorting to drilling all the way thru, I'm sure part of the problem is there isn't anything inside the door cavity for the screw to get a bite on and it's just the screw thread on the thin fiberglass panel. The simplest is the tooth picks,or maybe a small plastic anchor that will fit the existing hole, to go to oversize screws I might have to drill out the hole in the bracket so the screw will go in.

From some of the repairs the dealership made and/or told me it's supposed to be that way, it seems I am better off to do it myself unless it's a major warranty item.

Everyone take care.

Bill
