I think I'm going to try the Listerine idea as well. My daughter's Girl Scout leader just passed around an email about this idea last week, now seeing it mentioned here too, I think it's worth a try.
Muskol - stinky but worked good on the skin. Sprayed OFF over top of clothes/hair. We spent 10 days camping in alaska and only one bite on DH where he missed a spot. You don't want to use these chemicals for extended periods, but for the short term, it was very effective.

100% deet or maybee its 99.7% I cant read the bottle I have any more, the repellent does a number on the printing on the container. It works great, but we dont put it on our kids, we just keep a bottle of sss or whatever close and respray them often.
