I want to rip up the carpeting & put wood flooring in my Class A gasser. All is well ... except what to do with the doghouse, which currently is carpeted.

How have some of you handled this remodeling conundrum? I've thought about running the flooring up to the cockpit but not IN it ... leaving the driver & passenger areas carpeted. OR I could run the hardwood around the cockpit ... but having a little carpet "island" would look bizarre as well.

All feedback is welcomed!

something to think about.....my guess is the carpet on the doghouse helps with the noise level........I recently added foil lined sound deadening on the inside of my doghouse and was amazed at the difference it made.....I would stop the hardwood a foot or so from the start of the doghouse.....

I put laminate up to right behind the captains chairs and carpeted the cockpit area, including the doghouse, and the bedroom. It would have been impossible to put laminate on my doghouse, and it needs the insulation anyway. Look at my pics, scroll down and you'll find some showing the doghouse area. Carpeting the doghouse isn't easy, but do-able.

Steve, thanks for letting me see your pix. REALLY nice job on the flooring. You may have convinced me not to go with the wood laminate. I agree that it's best to run the flooring just up to the cockpit. I'd keep the carpet in the bedroom as well ... nicer on the feet.

I like that idea. If you recarpet the cockpit with something close in color to your wood flooring, the change in materials really shouldn't be jarring to the eye or anything.

I know this isn't what you asked, but while you're dealing with the doghouse I highly recommend insulating the doghouse. Big difference in noise and heat. I used to put a soda can in the cupholder on the doghouse and it would be noticeably warm in about 20 minutes. Now it stays cool much longer. DW and I can actually carry on a conversation at highway speeds now. Of course this could also be considered a bad thing .

The carpet helps with the noise and it also helps with the heat from the engine. The floors in the front and the doghouse get pretty warm while running the interstate on a hot day so I would keep the carpet and add more insulation on the inside of the doghouse.

While we are on the insulation topic, lots of us used Dynamat Hoodliner to insulate our doghouses....best thing we ever did to our motorhome!

Thanks for that info.

You just line the underside of the doghouse cover correct?
