St. Louis is not that bad. you can take beltway around North side I 270, then catch 370 (not interstate but is interstate quality) to avoid mess at St. Charles.
it certainly is head and shoulders above I-80 at chicago and no tolls. even if you "technically" aren't going thru chicago on I-80 you get all of the wonderful traffic problems.,

Last time we went thru there the road surface looked and felt as if it had just been bombed. Worse I have ever seen. Traffic was terrible too but that was directly thru on 70.

We will be leaving the Columbus Oh area next week enroute to SD. Mapquest routes us through the Chicago area via I-69 and I-90. We would rather avoid that area traffic if possible and travel the more southern routes, ie I-70, I-74 then onto I-80. What concerns us is the recent flooding in the southern Ind, Ill and Iowa regions. Are these floods affecting the interstate traveling?

While having empathy to the plight for those affected by the devastation, we still have to travel through. Any input will be appreciated.

We just came across I-70/I-74 thru Columbus to central IL and was on I-80 the past couple of days. The flooding isn't affecting interstate roads.

D'OH, that's why I said 270/370. during rush hour any big city will be dreadful. but the worst part of St. Louis I have experienced is if you go down to I-70 and out thru St. Charles.

Wadcutter,
I appreciate the info. I dread having to go through or anywhere close to Chicago with the traffic and tolls.

Since the I80 construction has been completed, you have 5-6 lanes each way and I have not hit any traffic the last few times thru there. (Weekday AM rush and Saturday PM).

Also, the only toll you pay is where 80 & 294 split.

The only construction is at the 80/65 junction and that's all on 65.
