Your lucky that you all it cost you was one hour. I was in a campground where a fellow camper wanted to borrow some nails. My curiosity got the better of me and I asked what he was going to do with the nails. He wanted to nail some tree's down to the blacktop behind his camper shell. He had off loaded the cab over camper on a 45 degree slant so he would not have to haul it around all week. When I first saw the camper it was sitting up in the air about 5 feet off the grond on this 45 degree slant. Every time he tried to back the pick up under the cab over camper it shoved it further down the hill. If he kept up that procedure he was going to have a cab over in the lake. I offered to loan him my yellow leveling blocks to at least level the cab over. An hour and a half later I asked if he would like to purchase my leveling blocks because I had places to be on down the road. Well he did not want to purchase my leveling blocks and my day goy off to about a three hour delay. Thats when I realized that some people are beyond help.

Well I think there were Jerks involved in both of these posts. But not the posters.
There are those who rely on people's good will and get upset when someone catches on to the scam.

I worked at a couple gas stations back when I was in college. I really learned alot about people. There are some people who feel they are entitled to anything they want.
We regularly had people stop who would want to borrow stuff: tools, gas cans, money, etc.
I had complete strangers ask if that was my car parked outside ... Then they would say they had a flat tire a block away and they want to borrow my spare tire. Some people even asked if they could borrow my car - just for a minute ...
But by far, the most common thing was people who ran out of gas would walk up and ask to borrow a gas can and a gallon of gas... Sure, but I will need a $5 deposit - they would not have it ... Some of them would argue or even threaten me ... one guy called the police because I wouldn't give him the gas without a deposit.
People are nuts - and they just think the world owes them everyting

Love those stories Jeff and the OP. We had the same all the time at our service station. We made them give $20 to borrow the gas can and the refund was always in fuel not cash. The best was when one of the guys (not my shift) took a prison ID as a promise to return the next day and repay the $100 he loaned the guy. It is people like these that make a person inclined to just keep on driving.

No by no means were you a Jerk AT ALL!!!
Sometimes it just amazes me how some folks think and act like you 'owe them the world', when you are just trying to offer some help in a bad situation.
BTW...that part about the dude telling you he could mail you a check was classic! It really made me ROFLO!!! Ohhhh, just wondered after he finally made the call to caa...did he even offer to thank you at all for trying to help? It would not surprise me if he didn't! Folks like that don't even think a simple "thank you" would be in order.
Thanks for sharing your story. Many of us (including my DH & I) have been there...done that...just trying to help others and have been equally amazed at some of the commits from those who are in trouble and what they EXPECT from a 'good Samaritan'!

I always try to help as much as I can. But that doesn't mean that you let youself be taken advanage of!! You did the right thing help as much as you can and then if that isn't enough for them, pack and leave.
Now for the good "I helped story"..
I was driving up the NJ turnpike and stopped for a coffee at a rest area, there was a family there with the hood up on their car. I asked if I could help and the father said he needed a jump. No problem, gave them a jump and before he lefted he asked for my address, I gave him a business card (I sell trucks), about 2 weeks later I got a check for $50 from his company, a thank you letter, and one of their company jackets. I sent the guy a thank you and he asked if I could help his company find a few trucks. In the next 5 years, I sold his company 75-80 trucks....well worth the 15 minutes it took to help someone out. He has passed away now and the company is gone.
Don't stop trying to be nice, someday you might be the one that needs the help!!!
