We just got back from what could have been a great little trip. The weather was great and the scenery from our campsite was great. The best part was the great neighbors we had. Anyway, we arrived at the campground and I was attempting to get the fiver into the site. As I was backing up, I leaned forward and twisted my body to the left to look into the mirror, and it felt like someone stabbed me in the kidney. I thought at first it was a muscle spasm, but now believe it to be slipped disc/sicatic nerve problem. So basically, I sat around all week and didn't do anything waiting to get better, which never happened. We decided to come back home early, and thanks to my camping neighbors we got hooked up and got home. I have been taking ibuprofen and resting and the pain is better, but I still cannot walk upright due to pain in the hip and right leg. My question is, how long does it take to get over this? I am not a very patient "patient", so any info/advice would be appreciated very much.

I sit around 6 weeks in pain last time I had something really bad. Finally went to the dr and within a few days had surgery.

I will never wait around again. Could be something as simply as getting your back popped or going to a massuse. Or it could be something bad. Why sit in pain?

I'd see a doctor ASAP if it hasn't gotten any better with rest and Ibuprofen. How long it will take to get better depends on what's actually wrong.

see a chiropractor get x-rays maybe they can help with adjustment and therapy its not good to Waite it could take weeks or months to recover depending on what happened.i would have iced the area of the lower back right away ,20 min on and off for awhile to prevent any swelling and pinching the nerves more.surgery would be my last resort from some people that i know that had it done and didnt do well after.

The pain from a slipped disc does not come from the kidney area. But if your hip hurts and the pain is going down your leg it is a pinched nerve that is causing it. There are three nerves going down your legs from your spine. The disc may have bulged out and is putting pressure on one of them. To get it back you need to stretch your spine by lying on your back or stomach and stretching. Either by hooking your feet to something and pulling with your arms or having someone pull your legs as you hold on to something with your hands. It needs to be done in repetitive pulls for a few times a day for about a week. You need to stay in horizontal position (lying down) to take the pressure off the disc and hence the nerve. Don't take to many pain pills as you will get better in time. Sometimes heat packs relieve pain too. BTDT (ben there done that). An MRI is the only way to go if you want a medical opinion, and see a neurologist not an orthopedist.

I agree. But get a couple opinions from different doctors.

Sounds like muscle spasms to me. My back goes out like that 2 - 3 times a year. It doesn't take a lot to cause it either. Usually it's with some sort of twisting/exended lifting motion. The pain is so swift and strong it drives me straight to the ground and I can hardly move, feels like getting stabbed in the back. Eventually I can turn over, get on my hands and knees and make it to a bed or couch.

Usually, 4 or 5 days of laying down will relax the muscles enough to start to move around but I don't feel "normal" again for 12 - 17 days.

You eventually get to know the warning signs and can adjust your activity level to avoid the full spasm.

Nothing wrong with going to the Doc to be sure, you'll probably be prescribed so muscle relaxers, from my experience they help a bit with the pain but have little impact on recovery.

I've found my best defense is strengthening my abdominal muscles and making sure I lift with legs and directly from the front.

Best of luck with your recovery, it's no fun....

IMO see a chiropractor. They sure help me when my back gets screwed up. I look for Palmer graduates, but whatever IMO make sure they have been to school. In some states I've been told anyone can call themselves a chiropractor, even if they were flipping burgers the day before.

Buy yourself an inversion table, it's worth it's weight in gold when your back is hurting. I've got 2 bulging discs L-4 & L-5 and got tired of doctors and chiropractors bleeding me dry! I saw this inversion table on H.S.N. and decided to give it a try. That was more than 10 yrs. ago and using this device has made my life much more bearable. It relieves the pressure and lets your spine "stretch" which relieves most of the pain. The doctors wanted to operate and the chiropractor just wanted to keep me coming back, it's just all about $$$! It sure works for me, maybe it would help you too.
