Yes, that sounds silly, but I miss those birds. I had no problem finding homes for more than a dozen horses, we ate the pigs and cattle, but those silly birds If I could, I would bring a few with me on our travels, but I am sure my DH would object a bit

Regarding digital, yes it is not the same. However, I have found some of the opportunities of the digital world to be very satisfying. I started several years ago reading online at the Library of Congess. I particularly enjoy the picture, drawings and photo galleries. I also like to search out the historical maps and photos of areas I am visiting.
Between DW and I, we reduced a several thousand volume library to a core of approximately 50-75 refernces and personal treasures.
Good luck and try to do the reduction through repetition. It seems to help make the process less traumatic.

When packing my libray I put them all in boxes and yes mine are in a storage unit....too many years of searching for irreplaceable books for me to get rid of them.
Just yesterday I went to get the 'consolidated-must-take-with' box of books from the storage unit. I got back to the MH and spent an hour trying to figure where to put them, let alone trying NOT to think about how much they 'weighed'.
Today I picked 8 of my most treasured books and put them on the nightstand in the bedroom.......and the rest are going back to the storage unit.

This was very hard for me also, have been collecting for 25 years. still owned every book and I read about 3 books a week, I actually panic if I don't have something I'm reading and another waiting for me.
But I decided that I wanted to travel than just read about other doing so. The easiest to get rid of is those I hated. then those that were OK but not that great. those I gave away. Then I had a garage sell and sold probably 500 books for 10 cent a piece, hopefully I have passed on the joy of reading these books to somebody else. The truly treasured I donated to a local charity, and gave to other readers who I know will really appreciate them. Right now have 2 in the fifth wheel and 6 more ready to go in. Hopefully once we hit the road will be able to find book exchanges to resupply(sp). Amazon has a new electronic book called Kindle am looking into that. While owning them was a joy, reading them was a greater joy and I plan to keep that up just may have to get creative in order to do it

We are still a few years away from being able to full-time, but I have started changing my reading habits to a digital based collection. I purchased an Amazon Kindle - ereader & have begun to purchase all my books for this reader instead of hard copies. Last summer I started culling through my hard copies & trying to begin the process of getting rid of what I could. I did it again this week & was able to let go of a few more. Hopefully by the time we are ready to go I will have made peace with this most difficult collection to let go of.
I'm sure I will do the digital thing. And I love Gutenberg...and the public domain movie sites. Don't get me wrong.
It's the rare books in my collection that I'll miss. But I bet I can't be stopped anyway. 10 to 1 I collect on the road and, when I think I've got to many, I'll sell on alibris.
Too bad chickens don't work that way, eh?

Hi Susan, it was so painful to let go of my collection. I spent 40 years collecting old medical books, illustrated books, and rare cookbooks. I said goodby to them and turned them over to my son for safe keeping. I gave him our lawyer bookcases and my beloved books and each time I go to his house I can take a peek at his collection. It's no longer mine, it's now his. Lindy

Sold a lot of mine in auctions on eBay. Got more than I expected for some of them, editions which are not available anywhere. If the bidding gets competitive, it is surprising how high it can go. Certain times of the year is best, Feb - June, summer is slow, then after labor day until Christmas.

I've been after my wife for quite some time to reduce her book collection to free up some MH space and she finally did. She bought the Kindle off Amazon. It wasn't cheap, but it holds several hundred books. She also loves the thing.

My boss found a cheaper solution to the Kindle...he bought an older model tablet pc and gets the books for free online...if anyone is interested I can get the finer details from him but he compared both and he is the ultimate tightwad.
