I have been a dirt bike rider and decided to try a 4 wheel off road machine. I wanted something that my girlfriend and I could explore together on. My 12 year old son and I will still ride our dirt bikes. I have a 26' WW and would like to get 2 bikes and the 4 wheeler in it. I have ridden both the Can AM and the RZR on and off the road. Most of the riding will be up in the mountains of AZ, Mammoth and places like Marysvale,UT. I do not plan to be riding out in the dunes. The Can AM seemed to have a smoother ride over rocky terrain and was quieter. Both were comfortable and had good power. The Can AM seems like it would handle rougher terrain and narrower trails. The CAN AM has a higher CG which could lead to a greater chance of rollover. Either of these machines would be great to own. Since I have limited 4 wheel off road time I am looking for input from other riders and why they prefer one over the other. The easy way out would be to get one of each...........maybe later. Thanx for any and all input in advance. Jeff

I owned a DS650 for years so, I like the Can-Am product. The Rotax is a great engine.

The RZR seems like a kick and you could feel more comfortable if your Lady wanted to hop in it and take it for a spin without you. . . that may be a streatch for your lady to get on the Can-Am until she gets some trail time.

I hear Can-Am is going to come out with a SxS for 2010.

The RZR is loud and I'm not as much of an advocate of the Polaris products. . . but, if I were buying today. . . I'd buy a RZR.

Jeff - the only concern I have about a RZR is it seems most folks are putting on wider tires for better stability - to prevent the roll overs. This may create issues on some lands then limit access to 48" or less. Hopefully some folks that ride both in the areas you are talking about can chime in.

We have both! I just got a rzr and my wife has a outlander max xt. The rzr is fun to ride but different than a ATV more like driving a 4x4 or go kart than atving.

I think the outlander would be better for trail riding especially when it comes to steeper terrain or rocky stuff (not that the rzr couldnt handle it but I would feel more comfortable on an atv than sitting in something).

I had the same problem.

I chose the Outy Max because: 1) some trails have barricades at the trailhead stopping you if you are too wide, 2) I wanted to be able to stand up, lean, etc depending on trail condtions, 3) driving a RZR is similar to driving my truck...I wanted something totally different.

We've put over 500 miles on it and my wife often tells me how comfortable it is.

The narrow part doesnt affect the rzr. I just rode some trails that had several 4x4 posts in the trail to keep anything wider than 50" out and it just made it with a hair on both sides!

I have an 800 Max and having ridden/driven both, I still vote for the Can-Am. One of the things I disloke about the Rzr is that you are sitting in the water holes, not just riding through them. I feel more comfortable on the quad for sure. I don't believe that stability is bad on the quad, as if you look at it, the C of G is still pretty low. I know that I take mine up and down hills that you can't walk, and still feel safe riding up/down with no "tippy" issues.

I have a couple of can-am's and just love them. For my type of riding in Alaska (sand, muck, rivers, very wet areas, mountains and rough trails) I vote for the can-am. I certainly don't have any complaints with them.

A Side X Side ( RZR ) and a quad are 2 completely different things, to ask a compare question is not doable.

To compare a RZR to a Truck is crazy also, I suggest you wait and ride a RZR before you decide, I have ridden many different quads and I have a RZR and my Friend has a Rhino. The RZR is a lot different than even a Rhino with top speeds of 55 mph with a 50” width

It is unbelievable fun to focus trails at 50 MPH in a RZR
