You have to give Colorado parks the award for "innovative financing." The site price is one thing, then you are charged $5 for each motorized vehicle. Each means you pay $5 for the motorhome on top of the site fee and of course $5 for the tow vehicle.

It's the same in Michigan, except it's $6 each ($8 if you're a non-resident). Even if you're only staying the night, and don't even unhook the toad, you still pay for the motorhome and the toad seperately. If you have a fifth wheel or a TT, you only pay for the towing vehicle (so far, at least).

New Jersey has not raised the price this year..it is $20 per night but though none of the parks have any hookups. While I certainly enjoy the parks quiet, wooded surroundings it would be nice to have the option to dry camp or to use hookups.

and some folks here wanted a private campground to offer no hook up overnights for $10 or so? you get nothing at a state campground that "costs" for $20?

Not true. Have already found some that are offering or considering dry, overnight camping at reduced rates - especially with the number of RV travelers dwindling. And as time goes on, and gas prices increase, you may see a lot more. The difference is that private campgrounds have to compete with one another, and also with the stores, restaurants, and truck stops that offer free overnight parking. Supply and demand comes into play. Plus, they still have to pay their taxes and insurance whether the spaces are occupied or not. An occupied $10 site beats an unoccupied $40 site any day. State Parks, on the other hand, administered by government, will just raise the rates, and make up any shortfall from state taxes.

Many State Parks in Michigan have rustic camping for $10-$12 a day. State Forest campgrounds are everywhere for $15 a night and National Forest campgrounds are less and often free.

Be aware that MI charges a daily fee for CG use so if you stay just one night, you are charged the fee for the day you check in and then again for the day you check out.

The fee is per night, not the day you check in and then again the day you check out.

Also there is no day use fee if you buy the yearly sticker for $24 ($29 out of state). Then you can come and go 365 days with no extra fees. Doesn't help if you're only staying one weekend a year but if you're in state it's worth every dime or plan to stay more then one weekend or just want to support the state parks*. We've only camped 2 days this year in the state parks but have spent many days in various state parks doing a picnic, bird watching or just visiting.

* At least in the past the park you buy your sticker at gets most of the money vs. if you buy online or directly from the state. So we always buy our sticker at our nearest state park.
