I am spending the summer in a M0BIL HOME PARK that a friend of mine owns. I am paying the electric and just found out that because I am in a RV I am paying almost three tines the basic rate and 2 cents a kw more than a house or Mobil home. I have talked to the power company, Duke Energy, and all they say is that what we charge. I am in North Carolina and I am a property owner here.

Has anyone ever heard of this? It seems like discrimination to me since it cost no more to supply me power than the Mobil home next to me. Do you know of any organizations that I could contact that could help me fight this for myself and all RVers that spend time in North Carolina? Just wonder if the FMCA might publicize this?

Thanks and maybe this is a good place to start making others aware.

So what is anyone to do? Not live/stay in NC?
I would contact the Public Utilities Commission. However I think that you will find that they can charge what ever they want. And you have the option to move! JMHO!

They will tell you that they charge more because the rate of "skips" is greater. Offer to pay in advance or leave a healthy deposit and see what they will charge. If you can't get a discount for that, get it in writing. That will be good ammunition for a DPUC complaint.

You are considered a temporary customer. You would be better off to pay and forget

That is odd. And in the few replies that have been psoted, I can see some rational for it. Not that I agree, but if it is true, I see the electrci company's logic.

But how do they know you are in a RV? Aren't you just at a metered pedestal like everyone else that is paying the electric bill on a usage basis? Or did you have to have the electric company come out and hook up a meter?

If it's listed in the Yellow Pages, the government shouldn't be messing around with it.

Good luck with that!! Rates MIGHT be regulated but I'm guessing that it's covered under the rate schedule and perfectly legal.

The reason they know is that the park owner had to put his TT on the lot to get everything inspected so I assume that is when they found out. Yes I am hooked to a meter post just the same as the mobil homes. I told them that I could understand if I had bad credit or had ever not paid my bill it would be something I might understand the reasoning. They said oh no that would be discrimination.

In almost all electric utility districts, temporary service is charged at a rate higher than permanent service. I suppose you are classified as temporary. I suggest you find out what you have to do to get rid of that classification. May be as simple as getting the wheels off the ground.
