Its a very HORRIBLE stretch of road from Truckee to the bottom.

We drove it 3 weeks ago and the west bound road is in very very poor repair, very bumpy and an extreme case of letting valuable infrastructure decline. It is the worst Interstate in the USA and we have driven them all.

Either drive at 40 mph or find another route.

The grades are no big deal. Just a very long descent from Truckee.

Did you happen to notice the major road construction to fix the interstate. It is getting completely rebuilt, which is very obvious to see when driving through. So things are being done. West bound traffic lanes have been moved to the East bound side for a portion so the work can get done. Spend a couple Winters up here, you might see why the roads are in the condition they are, these things take time and money to get fixed.
Also, from Truckee there is a long uphill grade to the top of Donner Summit, and then the downgrade begins with still a few uphill grades to contend with. Nothing that cannot be done with some careful driving and patience. It is what it is, if that is a problem for some, other options exist for your travel, but 80 is still the most direct and easiest route.
Are we talking about the same I-80?

What he said!! We came over this area Memorial weekend and I didn't think we would have any of the cabinets left on the wall before it got better. I even moved over to the left hand for awhile it was so bad.

Denn0007,

The most informative reply to your question was posted by Litch.

Yeah...the road is a little rough in spots, but your RV is not going to shake apart, or have cabinets fall off, etc.

I've towed between Sacramento & Reno many times over the years, and will continue to do so in the future.

Enjoy your visit to Sacramento.

If it were me I'd take Hwy 50 out of Tahoe to Sacramento.

The last time i drove across i left Reno at 4am because of less traffic and drove the left lane until someone came up behind me and then i moved over. Although essentially not legal to drive the left lane, one i moved over for happened to be CHP and i was not bothered by him as i'm sure he understood why i was in that lane,

We've done it twice in the last couple of months with our setup and the V-10 handled the grades no problem- it really is not that steep for that long. Yes, it is rough in places in the right hand lane but certainly do-able.

The construction was neat- 10 or 12 huge excavators on the hillsides moving huge rocks and stuff. The construction areas slow it down so you can enjoy the view.

The worst part is now, suddenly, it seems I have to pass cars doing 50- I guess they are saving gas.

Remember that this is one of the main wagon train routes the 49er's used so consider yourself fortunate!
