My Dad had a rear kitchen, with lots of problems dropping things out of cabinets. But the olive oil was the last straw. Great counter space and cabinets. But the center living area didn't work for them.

Our rear living unit, has the TV in that area, so we don't need to look thru the whole length of the trailer. I do like having the kitchen in the center. There is a lot of weight in the kitchen. Refer, Dishes, Pantry, groceries. I like having that weight over the axles. We try to cook outside as much as possible, so carrying everything out of the center kitchen is more convenient. And with slide pulled in we can get to the Kitchen, with no problems.

I am with Wayne. I think that all the hoopala about things bouncing around in a RK model is urban legend. Nothing is any more out of place in my RK than it was in the mid kitchen.

Wonder if ole kooter down there on spot 39 started that legend?

Thank you for all of your responses. It seems that enough people have had positive experiences with their rear kitchens that it seems it all comes down to preference of layout. Thank you so much for your input.

You must learn to pack the cupboards not throw things in. If it shakes it breaks! Youroo!!

We just brought our new rear kitchen 5er home last Thurs. and DW and I just love it. Seems to have much more room in the living room area and the Fridge is set on a 45degree angle in the rear instead of being flat on the back wall. This makes it easier for DW to access everything she needs to play house. She also likes the wrap around counter and corner sink. So far we havent had any drawers come out or any broken dishes. As stated several times before it is really a matter of personal prefference. We also like the mid entry door as opposed to the door being towards the rear of the camper.

We are now in our second rear kitchen fiver. Obviously, we really like this floor plan. We have not had any problems with stuff falling out of cabinets, etc. Proper packing solves that problem in most cases. We carry the heavy stuff in the cabinets on the floor just in case. We chose the rear kitchen after visiting with some friends who had the mid-kitchen. We were trying to watch the ball game on TV while our friend was fixing dinner in the kitchen. It was very distracting to say the least. I realize there are different mid-kitchen floor plans with the TV in the "living area" now, but we really enjoy our rear kitchen layout. I also like the idea of the entry door coming into the living area, not into the kitchen. The only negative with our unit is you have to open the slideout to get to the fridge, but that's not a big deal to us. I think it is more of a personal preference than anything else. Good luck.

Fulltimed in a Jayco 29rks for almost three years, coast to coast and back many times.

Never again. Thank you.. you get more space, but you sure gotta be careful how you pack your =dishes etc back there. Do not even think of leaving anything on the cabinets.

We have a rear kitchen. Wife really likes the island. We have MorRyde on it and everything rides very well. This one like many others, has the fridge slid in during travel so no access to it w/o moving the slide out. We thought about that, but when you consider the time you are on the road vs. stopped and set up, we didnt think it was a big deal. We usually pack a cooler before we leave and stop for a picnic on the way. That is pretty good too. As far as stuff breaking, we did break a handle off a coffee mug once. It was an old cup and probably weak anyway. This is our second rear kitchen.

My wife loves the rear kitchen. We actually have more counter space than with the previous 5th wheels with the side counter.

Yes, we had to learn all over again on how to pack.

We use extra pillows jammed in the cupboards to eliminate everything from bouncing around. Works for us!

first 5er was a '84 24' rear bath model that had no shocks. The med cabinet/sink cabinet on the rear wall contents were usually on the floor on a rough road. The next two 5ers were all RK models with shocks on the axles and not one single item was out of place.
All three 5ers had standard leaf spring suspension although the 24' rear bath model 8600 GVWR Aljo had two 5k axles. Dry weight was 5600 lbs.
