I agree with "snail." We are in Kenai now and arrived in Banff on June 3rd. We had no trouble. It snowed while we were on the Ice Fields Parkway, but did not stick. We're now wishing we had started a little earlier. So much to see and so little time.

In '04 we left home (Idaho) on May 7th traveling to Banff and Jasper on the way to AK. We were back home the 3 rd weekend of July. The timing was perfect, at least for that year. A few of the campgrounds weren't open yet but it was never an issue. Neither was finding fuel plus the summer crowds weren't on the road yet.

Snow was never an issue but remaining snow can be an issue depending on the winter. When I go again I'll leave about the same time.

Enjoy!

We just got home from 2 monthes up there. Weather is not a problem but a lot of places don't open until May 15th or May 24th. There is always something but I would suggest that if you don't have reservations for some places go mid May to end of June off the cuff and have a plan for reservations after that. Most important relax and enjoy.

Thanks to all for your great input. Right now we are planning to leave early. Probably entering Canada toward the end of May and getting into Alaska by June 10 or so. Our home base in Alaska will be Seward. We will be taking our tow vehicle - a 1999 Chevy Tracker 4WD. This is what we had been planning but were concerned about driving up thru Canadian Rockies in May. But that doesn't sound like anything to be too concerned about. We prefer to avoid crowds and don't mind the cold weather or a little snow.
