Transporting that many in this state without a CDL with a passenger endorsement is illegal. IMO, you are leaving yourself wide open for lawsuits. Hire a commercial bus.

As long as he isn't doing for hire or profit, in most states he would not be required to have CDL. My neighbor has 12 kids, I have yet to see a bus pull up to his house and I also know he only has standard drivers license. I also used to drive a van full boyscouts to various activites, a sixteen seater with all the seats in. My insurance company loved me. Bill

State or other laws have nothing to do with it!
Common sense is the requirement! JMHO!

It would be interesting to see what the rental company had to say about it too.

On my rig, I have seatbelts for 12 people as it was shipped by the manufacturer. However, there is a placard that states that the actual number of people that can safely be seated might be limited by other things. Namely, remaining under the GVWR and GAWRs for the chassis. Many motorhomes don't have the ccc to carry as many passengers as this plan requires. Should he choose to try this and everything works fine...well, no problem. But if there is an accident, this could be one more nail for the lawyers to nail into his coffin...so to speak.

I don't think I'd recommend this at all, and I suspect the rental company will not be in favor of it either.

Comeon, give the poster the benefit of having a lick of common sense. The question is about carrying the kids in the back, and I say go for it but just make them stay in one place, not get up and start batting practice. You might want to be sure the driver waits until the class clown goes into the john and run over those rumble strips on the edge of the highway. That's usually good for a laugh.

I doubt he'll have all the tanks full, storage bins full, the wife's complete wardrobe in the closet (there's half a ton of my ccc right there...lol), and food in every cupboard.

What is the gross amount of weight we're looking at? 1,600 lbs? I know of only a handful of Class A's that can't safely carry that much plus a full tank of fuel if you balance it out.

Air the tires to max, obey the speed limits and Go !!!!!!!!! and have fun.

Ok, just to play Devil's advocate, what if this inexperienced driver (assume no class A experience) in a rental RV has to brake suddenly and hits the car or truck in front of him at 45mph? What do those kids doing batting practice in the back suddenly do? They become airborne missiles with the consistency of ground meat. Would you want to be the one explaining to the parents that it was all in good fun?

Maybe I'm too cautious, but it seems when you're taking the lives of people into your control, you have to be more than just hopeful it will all turn out fine.

And... what if this person is a truck driver, they all go and have a good time and nothing happens?.. LOL !!!

Not sure how kids turn into ground meat, but something tells me the OP gave it a lot of thought, unfortunately he didn't realize that posting a simple question would bring out the per capita weight police. People ride in RV's every day and don't get killed, in fact I'll bet some are doing it as we "speak" in the back without seatbelts on. Heck, I'll bet some soccer mom has 12 kids and a doberman in her Suburban or minivan right now too.

I can break my leg slipping on the kitchen floor, but I don't worry about it every day.

OK, I've read all the other replies to this point and I have to ask - why rent an RV instead of a multi passenger vehicle? I haven't checked but wouldn't it be cheaper and more comfortable for the kids? Or has that been looked into already and rejected? I wouldn't think that having a bathroom would make that much difference for a one hour drive for kids that age. Just curious why an RV?

It is a nice thing to want to show the kids a good time. Hope it works out for all of you.

Common sense, some posters show it, some posters do not. Fun has nothing to do with it. Instead of showing them a good time, show them that you have thought this whole thing out and have decided not to do it this way and find another safer way to do it. This is asinine!!!!!

School buses have a seat and support design that creates a cushioned area for passengers in case of an accident. RV's don't have that type of structure, therefore, the lack of seatbelts in a school bus can't justify the transport of too many people in an RV.

I was NOT allowed to haul my son's Boyscout troop anywhere unless ALL the kids could be belted. It did not matter if the kids could fit in the motorhome or not. Boyscout rules stated that ALL scouts had to be belted when being transported. COMMON SENSE is you DO NOT haul kids other than your own in this scenario. I would NOT allow my kid to travel in this fashion with an inexperianced or experianced driver. KIDS are not the decision makers here. Their Parents are, and no parent with common sense would allow their kid to be transported in this fashion. Sure, it would be "fun", but a large van with enough seats (belts) would be safer and cheaper than an RV. I would bet if you called the State Police, they would say this violates the law (transporting minors without adequate belts) . Doug
