I would bet if you called the State Police, they would say this violates the law (transporting minors without adequate belts) . Doug

Actually my daughter did call the CHP once because we didn't have enough seatbelts fro her to join us. They told her its a house not car no rule!

Not that I agree especially since my motorhome that was manufacured in CA has a sticker over each dinnette seat saying not to be occupied while vehicle is in motion. Only the couch has seatbelts, 2 of them.

One biggie is you need to know your states laws, and any state he would be passing through. What any of us think or what our states laws are really doesn't matter. If MA says evryone must be belted then everyone must be belted.
As an example I knew of a law in one state where all available seatbelts had to be in use, as long as that was met people could sit anywhere!

Thanks for the additional information. That answers my question about why an RV. I misunderstood your original post. I thought your friend was taking kids to watch a sporting event not to participate. Played alot of softball when I was younger, ok much younger, and I can certainly understand how nice it would be to have an RV for between games.

Now you come out with a different question then what you asked in the first one. Now he will not be transporting 14 in the RV, the parents will be doing the transportation. Two completly different things.
So which question do you really want the responses to address. I am sorry that you did not include all of the information in the first question. So we are all holier than you and you don't beleive any of us??? Sounds like he has it figured out.

Transporting that many in this state without a CDL with a passenger endorsement is illegal. IMO, you are leaving yourself wide open for lawsuits. Hire a commercial bus.

With a Professional Driver!

As long as he isn't doing for hire or profit, in most states he would not be required to have CDL.

Make that any state.

Except Virginia, which requires volunteers driving a church van to have a CDL.

Oh, wait, Virginia is a commonwealth, not a state. Nevermind.

Some self righteous responses to say the least.

So, I have to assume that EVERY SINGLE PERSON who responded with a snide remark regarding the absurdity of the question has NEVER ONCE for even 30 seconds, undone their seatbelt to retreat to the back of the RV to get a box of cookies.

Oy! Sensitive!

tailgater,

I have to agree with othertonka on this, it sounds like you changed the scenario a bit from your first post.

As for your statement:

"So, I have to assume that EVERY SINGLE PERSON who responded with a snide remark regarding the absurdity of the question has NEVER ONCE for even 30 seconds, undone their seatbelt to retreat to the back of the RV to get a box of cookies."

I believe there is a world of difference between letting one of my own family members briefly move about the vehicle UNDER MY SAY-SO ONLY and travelling with someone else's children continually unrestrained because the vehicle was over it's rated capacity.

I apologize if my post offended you, I didn't intend it to. I just suggested that this idea, as proposed in your first post, be abandoned. And while my post did bring up "weight", I did so only as an additional reason as to why this shouldn't be done, perhaps one a "newbie" wouldn't think of. And counter to texasbaskets' comments, there are MANY RV's (A's and C's) that are near or over either their GVWR or at least a GAWR loaded with little more than fuels and 2 passengers. I have no idea what type of "rental" your friend is looking at. So, being somewhat conservative (and perhaps pessimistic), I assumed a worst-case scenario.

I also find it amazing that the rental company would go along with this idea. Methinks they might not have been told the entire story, especially knowing this would be in Massachusetts, the Land of Lawyers!

Lastly, I would really like to know what Class C had a floorplan that could seat 16 (14 children & 2 adults)? I've NEVER seen such a critter.

I wish your friend's team good luck in their games. I hope they have a great time and travel safely.
