I want to replace my old awning with camo netting. All of the old hardware has been removed and I am starting from scratch. I was thinking about using PVC or EMT to make a frame which can extend from the roof. I would like to make it so that there is shade on the passenger side and also shade behind the rear window. Any ideas?

How to you plan to move this setup? Sounds like it will take up a lot of room to store; and take forever to assemble and break down.

I also don't follow this? Is this for a seasonal unit or something you will set up and take down often? Camo netting won't be waterproof are you sure this is what you want? I am sensing a Jeff Foxworthy joke in here somewhere "You might be a redneck if your RV awning is camo netting" lol!!!

I'm not sure at all how I'm going to do this. This is not redneck, but there is a joke there, lol. It is for a theme camp. The netting is bright and colorful. We are going to be camping in the desert for a week. Rain is very unlikely. There is no shade. The wind is too high for a traditional awning. Somehow I wanted to create a shady area or two without having to use tent poles. I was thinking about placing a couple of pieces of pipe up on the roof perhaps attached to the luggage rack or temporarily mounted some other way so that several feet of the pipe can hang out over the side, and have the camo drapped over it and tied down.

If your talking about U.S. Army camo net, stay away, stay far away. Setting that stuff up was the biggest pain in the rear ever. Used it quite often over our AN/TPQ-36's and 37's. Nothing but a tangled mess of headache, no matter how well you pulled the twigs out and how nicely you folded them up.

Well PVC pipe will not work well for this unless it is supported and I think it would be doubtful even then. Aluminum conduit piping, maybe 1" or 1 1/4" stuff might work but that stuff is pricey.

military camo netting is a pain plus it is fairly heavy.

Ignore all of the previous updates. The real question is brown side out or green side out?

We did a similar canopy project with emt and a surplus tent floor. About 5 minutes to slip the emt bars in and another 5 to attach to my roof rack. That's would be for basic shade but we never use it that way..

We mate it to a 10x10 FirstUp quickshelter. The screen set for the FirstUp has full-side doors and those open 5' doors form the side walls of the canopy. It lets us leave the van door open and gives us a 10x14 screened and shaded space.

The real key is that the FirstUp is wicked strong and since the canopy is tied at all four corners it is very wind resistant.

Project pix and see the signature photo.

Good luck with the cammo. Have you tried the Army surplus stores to buy a complete cammo set with the poles? Cammo does make a good shade in the desert.
