We just brought our little one home from the shelter last night and she is very shy. I believe she spent the first 5 months of her life in a puppy mill, and the last 4 weeks in a shelter where she was kept with her littermates in a kennel with a crate. She doesn't shake with fear, but she's content to spend all of her time in the crate we've set up in the kitchen. She's obviously very comfortable in the crate so crate traing shouldn't be too difficult. We've got another dog who is mildly interested in her. Any suggestions on how to bring this little one out of her shell and playing with the rest of the family?

I also had a dog from similar circumstances. She would also curl up on a piece of paper if found on the floor, no matter how small the paper. She eventually grew out of her shyness and was a very loving and lovable little dog (half maltese half pomeranian). We just kind of let her do her own thing and when she was ready she would come to us. We tried to interact with her every chance we got but she would allow you to love on her at her convenience not yours.

Just speaking from personal experience with a couple of former puppy mill breeder dogs. If she truly came from a puppy mill she will take time, plenty of patience and a lot of love to blossom. Having another dog will certainly help this process, chances are your established dog will help teach your new arrival how to be a pet. It is often simply a matter of the formerly captive bound dog watching and mimicking behavior but sometimes the established dog will actually take an active role in the rehabilitation by encouraging the new dog to trust you. If she came from a puppy mill her world just expanded by huge proportions she may seek the safety of the crate often when she is feeling overwhelmed and that isn't a bad thing, she needs a safe haven. She will need an even more gentle kind of encouragement when it comes to housetraining and once again may pick up a lot of this behavior from your established dog. Please keep in mind she doesn't necessarily associate humans with gentleness and will spook easily, even sometimes when you are trying to love on her & pet her. I often just laid on the floor with our Petey during the first few weeks, not petting him but rather letting him get used to having a human near.
Thank you for taking in this baby! If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask or send me a PM, I will be glad to help if I can.
Patience, love, and time will make your new rescue into a happy loving member of your pack!

We rescued a yorkie from a vet clinic in Mo. that was at a puppy mill over 6 months and then 3 months at the vet.He would just stand or sit in one place for what seemed like hours. After picking him up and carrying him from place to place in the living room took him about 2-3 wks he has come around and is now very active and we can't seem to slow him down. Its just took alittle time and now he's a big part of our family.Hang in there and good luck!congrats on a new dog!!

All I can say is lots of love and patience. Once she realizes this is her new home she will let her guard down and start to explore. Try feeding her outside of her crate and be near while she is eating. Did I mention lots of love and patience? I am sure that once she realizes that Duke is an ok little guy she will bond to him which will help in her transition. I think it took Chloe a few months before she finally realized this was her home and it took a few years before all of her fears were completely gone. We JUST started not crating her while we are at work but that is where she is most of the day because that is her safe spot.

Imagine what a wonderful morning it will be when you wake up and see that Dixie is no longer shy or afraid in your home.
It will happen with your love. That will be a fantastic accomplishment to turn her life around to a happy one.
