This part still confuses me.
Are there mail services that you don't have to go and get a dr. lic from that state? Or is it a package deal.

I won't be arriving in TX or SD for at least 2 months (have not decided on which state to pick for resident state), so I am in limbo on how to get my mail for the next couple of months?

You can use anyone for a mail service. We picked Alternative Resources long before we left CA. You do not have to become a resident of the state in which you have a mail forwarding service. You can be a resident of any state and have your mailing address anywhere else.

thank you for that information.

We've been using "My Home Address" going on 11 years out of Emery, SD, no complaints.

We have My Home Address. Like it.

Now SD works good unless you have a CDL and/or if you have a pre-existing health problem.

The pre-existing health problem. No health insurance company in SD will cover you. But you might be able to get the SD high risk pool insurance if you can jump through their hoops correctly.

With a CDL and the SD high risk pool, your mail forwarding address isNOT considered a physical address. So be sure to talk to your mail forwarder about this.

Alternative Resources for 5 years. Another flawless performance. We had everything going including registrations for several months before we were able to get there and get our licenses. No problem

Diane,
We'll be passing papers on our MA house in August and planned on using a local (MA) mailing service temporarily in order to keep our licenses and insurance "legal." Now we're wondering if we can go ahead and jumpstart our registrations and insurance in SD before we can get there to get our licenses. ??? How does that work?
I know I'm digressing here, too, because I know the answers are elsewhere and I will do a search, but would folks like to share their favorite vehicle insurance companies that we can use from SD?
Thanks!
Eileen

another consideration in SD is America's Mailbox in Rapid City. Like the others they give great service including registration of your vehicles. They are also in Pennington County which does not have a wheel tax on vehicles. It's not a big deal but something else to consider.

Eileen, we use AON Recreation for the vehicle insurance. Once you register the vehicles, I believe you have 90 days to get dls. Give Alternative Resources a call, they have the answers you need....

I have been following the threads as far as the SD domicile and I have explored the mail forwarding websites and will definately use one that does not have the "wheel tax" as why pay the extra if not required.

My question is I have seen many recomendations as to getting your "address" well in advance. This I can see, now my question is that as I prepare to go on the road fulltime I have been selling off vehicles that I do not plan to retain and have recently bought an older Motorhome and another motorcycle that will go on the road with me.

Both of the new to me vehicles was purchased recently from private owners in other states and not in my home state and neither has yet been registered. I would prefer of course to do the initial registrations with the state of SD. and go ahead and get the insurance coverage based in SD. as well as then those would be items that could be checked off on the need to do completed list.

As I prepare for this journey of course I have time frames in my plans but plans do not always fall as we envision. Actually I am looking at hopefully 4 months give or take a few weeks. I would like to get the vehicles registered and insured in the near future rather than wait so they would be legally operational.

What would happen in the event that I was a couple of months longer making it out to SD. than the 90 day time frame to get my DL? I am working in my home state and have a residence here until my departure.
Thanks, Bill
