One of the nicest things about Holiday World is that they don't charge you to death like Six Flags does. The food is resonably prices and they have drink kiosks every 100 yards or so where pop and water is free. When we go to Six flags we have to pay $10 for a sports cup and then pay each time it gets refilled.
There isn't alot to do in the area besides Holiday World. we have relatives who live close by so we are usually visiting them when we go. Evansville isn't far away and I believe there are some state parks nearby that have some lessons in history but we havent been there yet.

You've got a Jellystone right there with waterslides. Get that out of your system locally and save the longer trip for some pretty stuff. Stay at Starved Rock SP and hike the canyons at nearby Matthiesen SP. You won't believe you are in northern Illinois.

Sandusky Ohio totally rocks. Not only because of Cedar Point and Soak City, but there are 3 (soon to be 4) indoor water parks within a 15 minute drive, including Kalahari which is the largest in the country. There are dozens of campgrounds in the vicinity, our personal favorite being East Harbor State Park in Marblehead, about 15 mintes from Sandusky. Also in Marblehead is another outdoor waterpark called Monsoon Lagoon. Much smaller, a WHOLE lot less expensive (about $15 a person), not as many thrills as the bigger parks, but perfectly adequate for your age kids. It never seems overcrowded. You WILL rest your bones there and have a wonderful day.
There's tons to do in the Sandusky/Marblehead/Port Clinton/Lake Erie Island area. We camp nowhere else.

If you want to do the St. Louis area thing (Cardinals, Arch, zoo etc.), St. Joe State Park about 40 miles south of St. Louis is a great campground. Although it is primarily an ATV riding area, there are swimming beaches and lakes, bike trails and again close enough to St. Louis where you can do all of the tourist things there. Have fun

Silver Dollar City is a great place to go. Branson itself is a nice little town. Then maybe you could drive three hours north to see us in Columbia!

I vote for Santa Claus!! We usually go there at least twice a year. We love it there. It's the cleanest amusement park I have ever seen in my life, I love their waterpark too. It has something for everyone in the family. The campgrounds are nice, with swimming pools. The Squire Boone caves are not too far away, which is a great place to explore with kids, especially on a hot, hot day, because it is nice and cool down there year round. On your way back stop in Leavenworth at the Overlook Restaurant for great food, and a beautiful breathtaking view of the Ohio River as you are perched high above looking down in the valley. If you bring along a sitter, you can sneak off to French Lick to the Spa or do a little gambling in the casino. For the kids there is a great train museum next door to the hotel in French Lick. They can take a ride on a real old fashioned train. There's lots to do down that way.

My family really enjoyed the Mamouth Cave area in Cave City, Kentucky. The Yogi Bear campground was nice, and had a waterslide and miniature golf. We spent a day at Kentucky Down Under and Dinosaur World. The kids loved both (3 & 5 yr olds). There are many attractions in the area. Alot of small caves to tour besides the largest cave in the US, Mamouth Cave.

Well the deed is done! After hearing problems at Indiana Beach have moved plans to Lake Rudolf/holday world for the week. Will be the first major pull for our 40' dual slide monster(59'clicked). Lake rudolf had to find a wide deep slot for us. Next weekend we gota pull the deck air up the tires and be on the move sunday morning. Not much time for true shake down, but its new and only 10' longer and 5000lbs heaver than our last trailer. We put new shocks on the excursion and found the front springs have sagged 2" from stock will try to replace this week, but should be fine as the 1200lbs tounge settles the rear. Gona run the scales in peru IL just to see how far above ratings we are, should be intesting. thanks to all, for all your help!
