Can anyone recommend one or two things to see traveling down thru the Skyline Hwy of Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Not sure if I should enter the north entrance and just see the Northern section.
Second, any recommendations on a good white water rafting trip in the Maggie Valley area of Smoky Mountains? Going up there july 4th for two weeks.
If I remember from years ago if you follow the entire Skyline Drive it will take several hours, multiple places to pull over and photograph (pretty much all the same), and many hills and curves and slow going. Not to do with a camper.
Maybe you would want to take a Dramamine and/or just see a portion of it.

Once you get on the Great Smoky Mountain Freeway. There are several rafting businesses near exit 77. Als Don't forget to see the Great Smoky Mountian RR, and the Dillsborough Smokehouse
Rob, After reading your other postings, if you come from Lancaster area, come west thru York, PA (Harley Davidson factory tours) south on US15 to Fredrick then US340 to Harpers Ferry National Historic Park. US Rt9 & Rt7 to around Leesburg to US15, south to US211, west to Skyline Drive at Thornton Gap. Enter the Shenandoah Park here and go south and camp at Big Meadows in the Central Dist of the park. Next to the South Dist. and camp at Loft Mt. Continue south to Afton Mt I-64 at MP106. You will have to make a decission. West to I-81 to the Smokies, OR straight ahead into the Blue Ridge Parkway, or southeast toward Lynchburg and Appomattox Court House, Bedford and the Nation D-Day Memorial, Brooker T Washington National Historic Site, and then west to Roanoke and again the choice of the Blue Ridge Parkway or I-81 south.
The Skyline Drive in Shenandoah NP is 35 MPH for 106 miles. The Blue Ridge Parkway is 45 MPH (someplaces 35) for 460 miles to the Great Smokies. Do go slow enough to see and enjoy the area. If you must, you can get to I-81 or I-77/I-40 to make time to get to the GSNP. There is a lot to see around Asheville, NC, and mountain crafts by the local folks throughout the southern Virginia and NC mountains. Lots of places to pull off the Blue Ridge Parkway, not like Shenandoah Park with only 4 access point for its 106 miles.

I think my suggestion is in that area...Natural Bridge, VA. We stopped there for a fast overnight rest. Decided at the last minute to un hook toad and explore the are for the evening. I think Matural Bridge is a state park, we went there, they have these light shows (which are a bit religious-which you may or may not prefer) we watched some of the show and walked around the area, very nice.
We live just east of the national park and in our opinion the prettiest part of the park is the north end. We usually go up onto the Skyline Drive at the intersection of Rt. 33 and drive north and sometimes will go to the end, other times we will get off at Rt. 211. Route 11 on the west side has quaint little towns and interesting places to see, Harrisonburg being one of the larger towns. There are a number of campgrounds on the west side of the national park, off of I-81. Sadly, the government took more from our county to create the park and we did not even get an entrance!
Come on down and visit Mount Airy ( Mayberry) if you have time.
