I am about to buy my first 5th wheel and was wondering what are the differences between the clam shell type and the rounded slider bar type (Reese/Drawtite Pro Series), in terms of locking onto the pin? The clam shell grabs around the pin. The rounded slider bar appears to slide across the back of the pin, but I may be all wrong.
Should I get one over the other?
Any advice is appreciated.

I have an RBW. It has the bar that slides across the back of the pin. Don't have to worry about whether the clam is locked. Just my preference.

Have you checked the Pull-rite hitches yet? I have a Super-glide and for my situation with a short-bed truck, I think it's the best. Maybe a bit more $$$, but I feel it was worth it.

From what I've seen/read, stay away from the Reese/Drawtite brand/style. I have a Husky & couldn't be happier w/it.

I went with a SuperGlide hitch since I have a SB. Did my research, and would buy the hitch again if I had to do it all over again.

I vote for the slider bar that locks the pin in the hitch. I have a pullrite hitch that I have used to tow both our fivers for over 100,000 miles and have never had an incident.

Can you elaborate any? What problems are you aware of or is there a resource that discusses the problems?

Lets see...I am a salesman and can sell this guy a good $400 hitch
or a good $600 hitch...why not bad mouth the $400 dollar and push
the $600 hitch...wow that was easy...works every time

Pearlbum,
Reese/Drawtite are the leaders in the industry. Anybody who would tell you to stay away from their product has no clue on how to buy, or how to give advice. I do not own stock in the company, nor do I really care which hitch you go with as they have developers and engineers that have worked their tails off for years to develop a safe and reliable product that will stand up to the test of time. Do your own research from here and ignore someone who tries to lead you in another direction.
