Pearlbum,

Reese/Drawtite are the leaders in the industry. Anybody who would tell you to stay away from their product has no clue on how to buy, or how to give advice. I do not own stock in the company, nor do I really care which hitch you go with as they have developers and engineers that have worked their tails off for years to develop a safe and reliable product that will stand up to the test of time. Do your own research from here and ignore someone who tries to lead you in another direction.

I have a Valley/Husky slider, and it was chosen as that is what the previous owners had in the truck, and I didn't want to have to drill more holes in the bed. It operates just fine, very solid and mechanically sound.

I have a Reese 16K slider that was installed at the dealer when DW and I picked up our new 5er last week. So far I have had no issues and it is very easy to operate. I don't know much about the different brands as I am very new to the 5er world but in my opinion the Reese seems to do good for what I need it for and the cost was very reasonable.

welcome to the forum
as you see the brand/hitch head type the posters has is the best. Semi trucks use a clam shell type of hitch. I personally have had a new sliding bar type not latch correctly and drop my 5er. Does that make the sliding bar type bad ?? Certainly not. The hitch was fixed and it worked flawlessly for eight more years.
Doing a search shows the by far the dropped 5er problem usually is a high hitch which is operator errow that can happen with any hitch. Claims that certain brands/hitch head types are best and theirs won't hi hitch (hi pinned) or drop is RV newby talk. Hi hitching is simply the pin being to high when hitching up. The pin flange just hits the jaw enough to close them. It even will usually pass a pull test but drops on the first turn.
Choose the brand/hitch head type you like and go RV'n.

Thanks for the info everyone. I know every product out there has had its share of bad user experiences. Nothing and nobody is perfect.

I'm glad to see there isn't a mass negative reaction to the rounded slider bar. I have looked at the Superglide and they are pretty slick, but I don't know if I can swing the price when the Reese appears to be fine.

I also have a Reese signature series slider and I haven't had any problems with it. To answer your question though on my hitch it's like a hook that goes around the pin.

I have used the Reese style for many years with absolutly no problems. Locks secure and kinda like the wrap around clam shell type of hitch. With that being said my Reese was a 14000 series and just a straight hitch. Went shopping and found a L'il Rocker from RBW for a faboulous price and it did have the side to side movement which my Reese did not. Bought it and the bar type of lock is OK and again for the last 2 years no problems. What I don't like is there is no way to lock it from someone releasing it as there are no lock fittings on the release bar where the Reese did have a locking area on it. I think it is more a matter of personal preferance than anything else. They are all good and each has a fearture or two thhat makes it stand out from the others. Look, study, read then buy what suits you and works for you.

I have used a Reese 16k slider and the only problem I ever had was the slide not sliding easily. That was no fault of the hitch it just needed cleaned and lubed to function like new again.

They are all good or they would not still be in business. JMO

I have the B&W that converts to the ball for goosneck trailers or flips over for a flat pickup bed. No problems. It does have the clamshell design.

I too have the B&W Companion, clamshell type and prefer it over the Reese. I had to borrow my dad's Reese 20K hitch (clamshell type too) for a while until I could take out the 5er rails in my truck (there when I bought it) and install my B&W gooseneck hitch. I found, and it may just be me, that unless the truck was in neutral I could not get the hitch to release (Reese brand). At times I would have to backup just slightly to take tension off of the hitch to get it to where I could pull the handle to get it to release. Like I said, maybe just me, but my Companion doesn't require me to do any of that. I pull the pin and lock the handle back and drive out from under it. Very simple and I like it. If you have need for a gooseneck in addition to a 5er hitch, you might consider that one as well.
