Hello to All,
Just wondering if anyone out there has volunteered at Henry Horton State Park in Middle Tennessee. We are scheduled to work (Vol) there during October and November this year. If you have and would like to share your experience please give me a PM or you can post it here.

Well...guess no one has had any dealing with this park. I do know that lots of folks visit this park each year and it is a very popular stop for those that like to shoot skeet and play golf.
Thanks for reading the post and I will update the board with the results of our work experiences and stay during the month of October 2008.

Will be curious to here what they have you doing. A couple we volunteer with in FL worked in a TN SP near Memphis this March. It was the first time the park had ever had a volunteer - other than host. Guess the TN SP's are not used to volunteers other than camp hosts.

Well the basic duties consists of:
1. Checking campers in and collecting money for the stay. Money is transfered to the Ranger at the end of each evening. Accountability for all money is critical. So, this is a biggie for us.
2. Maintain camp sites for cleanliness: fire rings, BBQ pits etc.
3. Monitor camp ground activity: Safety and quiet hours.
4. Work with the Rangers as needed for security. No direct confrontation by the park host is allowed. We are instructed to call (radio) the ranger on all problems and they will handle as required. The rangers in this park are the best in the country and try to make the park very safe and they do not tolerate unrulely behavior or vandalism. This makes our job a lot easier I think.
5. Interact with campers as required to make sure they have a pleasant stay in the park system. We like this as we enjoy meeting folks.
5. 24 hours (+/-) (combined) duty required...probably will do more than this. This park has only one (1) campground host on site.
Comment This park requires only one (1) host (couple). Our goal is to make recommendations to the park system to open up another host site during peak season. This park is really busy during Sept and Oct due the leaf color changes. A very beautiful park indeed. We posted this thread origionally to seek out someone that may have worked as a camphost here to get their input. We appreciate all input and comments so far.

Dianne The park is a haven for lots of activity and, yes, you guys would love this place. We have learned so much from this forum in what to expect as far as volunteering. We appreciate the positive comments we have recieved over the past year from all all of you, especially the encourgagement from the moderators of the forum. Due to all of the input, we have had very good results working in the Georgia State Park system, and I hope it contiues with this venture.
