There is another post that is dealing with CPU and Memory usage while using Firefox ver. 3. The numbers that is quoted is much lower than what I am seeing as to memory and higher than I see with CPU usage. I do know that after cussing and discussing Vista with this list and the maker of my HP computer, they finally are sending me a box to return it after 8 months and they will replace the processor board.
Right now I'm showing only 2 to 4% of CPU usage but 1.03 GB of Memory. The only operating programs I'm running is Verizon Aircard, Thunderbird email and Firefox 3. My question is: is that 1+ Gig of memory a lot higher than it should be???

Have you checked the services running on your machine, Hershey? I just did my quarterly system maintenance check and found several running that were not necessary. Shut them down and moved their activation from Automatic to Manual and dropped the Processes from 45 to 37 after a boot.

Best way to look at services is RUN > SERVICES.MSC

Had things like Google Updater, Adobe Licensing, Adobe File Monoitors and several others running that were not necessary.

As with mucking around in the Registry, you can do harm if you're not sure what's going on, but it can also speed things up a bit.

1.03 gig for XP would be about 3 times too high for the minimal activity you see and your CPU should be between 0-2%, but I'm not at all sure about what Vista should look like.

Vista is a memory hog compared to XP, but yeah you may have several unneeded processes running in the background, worthwhile to check out. Keep in mind to, you are probably running other needed things like antivirus, or windows defender or other spyware programs in the background, also firewall if its turned on. That probably werent there under XP.

For those of us who don't have Vista machines (I'm still using Windows 2000) can you elaborate on the difference.

On edit: I found this explanation of Vista's free memory calcualtion.

Thanks for that interesting link Tom. As long as they also toss cache instead of swapping to disk it sounds like a fine idea - but I'm not sure I'm willing to give them than much credit right off the bat!

That's interesting. Using memory like that is something that has bothered ex Windows users who move to Linux for a long time, as Linux always loads everything it can into memory, apparently Vista does the same.
