I decided to install Service Pack 1 for Vista a couple days ago. I had been holding off waiting for MS to fix the inevitable first bugs caused by it. So far I've seen no really difference in performance or functionality - better or worse.
My environment is a Toshiba laptop with Intel Duo-core 5450 1.66GHz, 4gb ram, wireless N, and all the usual tools/applications. I also run CAD software that is extremely memory and network intensive.
After a couple days of work I compared performance numbers for memory, hard drive, and network access times and all are within a few milliseconds (ms) of what they were before SP1.
All in all, I guess I'd recommend installing it as it didn't seem to hurt performance like most previous MS "upgrades" have.

You already paid for it so they don't care. They will offer a solution and that is to buy the next windows, I think Windows 7 next year.
I gave my Vista machine to my wife, she hated it so I just installed xp and it is really fast. I didn't install XP initially because HP told me there were no sound drivers, they lied, I used the drivers for a dv9000t from their site and it work fine, it is a dv9260. HP has lost a customer, but I doubt they care.
If you use readyboost you can increase performance of a Vista machine.
OK, I'm stuck with Vista too. Never heard of readyboost. What is it and what does it do? Maybe it will keep me from throwing this machine against a wall.

Vista can use a flash drive that is ReadyBoost compatable. It will increase Vista's speed. You can find out about it on the online shopping sites.
You are badly mistaken if you think that Microsoft "fixes" bugs. "
Not even close to the truth.
Why did you think that you would get a performance boost with SP1?
Why do you have 4 gb of memory? No 32 bit machine can take advantage of the 4 gb.
