I understand that Route 500 in Labrador is under construction. Would that (or road conditions)impede passage in August of a Ford Expedition pulling a 25' travel trailer? I am headed for an Elderhostel on Newfoundland Island that begins 17 August, and I like "routes less traveled"--as long as I can get through. Thanks for any info.

Twomed:
Thanks for the great links. Now I know that not only is it feasible but a must do. Someone said it took about two weeks to go from Newfoundland to the southern end of 389? Since I have a firm commitment in New York State in late July and on Newfoundland Island 17-23 August, looks like I should reverse course plans and return through Labrador in early September.
I did not find a message concerning travel in 2008. Has anyone made the trip this summer (or is it still too early)? The comments that Twomed steered me to were mostly about scenery and black flies, rather than than road itself. Can I assume from that the road is not a deterrent? Does fly season extend into September?
Thanks,
Paul

They have upgraded the whole road from Matane to Happy Valley to class one gravel. The portions that were completed when we did it were just fine.

Traveled in late June... a little rain once or twice. Nothing terrible.

We returned today from a trip to Newfoundland and Labrador. We drive a Class B. Bad weather turned us around at Red Bay but we had already been discouraged from going further by folks coming from the other way (Quebec). We also met construction workers on the ferry. The popular opinion seems to be that the road will be finished in 2009, but probably not paved. We did not met anyone who had driven an RV to Red Bay (via the Goose Bay ferry). just trucks and a mini-van. All reported a hard trip, but beautiful.

Lizzie - Thanks for weighing in. All comments welcome. I have been doing some online research regarding the Baie Comeau-Labrador City-Goose Bay portion, and so far it looks quite good. Once I get to Goose Bay I can always take the ferry directly to Newfoundland if I have to, though I would prefer to cut costs by driving from Cartright south. It will be a month before I head north from the St Lawrence, and perhaps July will see other travelers commenting.

Oh Sugar,

I did that trip in 2006 and I preferred to trave @ 40 km/hour because one could hit a stretch not long after rain and be a bit washboardish. But OMG, you drive conditions and enjoy. Speed limit was 70 then.

Expecting paved road and multilane highway, come on!!!!

It's a very nice trip and in my photo album, thanks. You have to make sure you have a reservation for the ferry from Happy Valley - Goose Bay to Cartwright and back.

I'm very sorry for those who couldn't take the care or the time to drive realistically. The roads are very passable. This is nice countryside with nice folks.

& I, I took the road less travelled by.

Little Kopit,
My only concern is making the trip too fast. So I am wondering if I can break the Baie Comeau to Labrador City into two portions. Is there an RV park or place park one at Manic 5?
thanks, Paul
