My wife and I have been traveling along the East coast during the last three weeks. We usually fuel up either at Flying Js or Pilot stations along the way.
Pilot gas stations advertise that their regular unleaded fuel contains up to 10% of ethanol.
Can someone tell me if fuel containing ethanol burns faster or is it as economical has the non-ethanol fuel.

Less BTU per gallon.
I get a 10-15% reduction in mileage with the stuff. Higher price, less total energy available, hate what it does to my motorcycle carburetors, vapor locks much easier. Apparently it burns cleaner however I have to use more for the same mileage so the net decrease in pollution vs miles is probably zero. I can no longer find any gas station around that doesn't have the nasty gunk in their fuel.

E10 or 10% ethanol fuel in modern engines should in theory be almost equal to regular gas in mpg. As the ethanol % goes up then mpg goes down. People like to talk about flex fuel or ethanol engines as a solution to the oil problem, but in reality, the way Americans drive, we will practically live at the gas station constantly having to fill up. I have seen some estimates that mpg could drop as much as 30% with E85 (85% ethanol) gas. Given the reduced mpg, the cost per gallon of ethanol gas would likely be even higher than the current gas prices. Just my opinion.....

E-10 has been around a long long time.. However the small amount actually benefits many vehicles as that low an amount of alcohol in the tank will absorb water and allow it to burn, thus preventing such things as Fuel Line Freezup here in the great white north in the wintertime.
Alas... In the summer time .. Well. I'm not sure why they add it.
Of course.. I also know of at least one (now closed) station that is rumored to have topped off his tanks with a garden hose.... (Why as the rumor goes he is closed) I once buought gas there.. Burned like the rumor was true. I never returned no I never returned my lesson had been learned (To the tune of M.T.A.) I never bought gas there again.

Alcohol reduces your mpg, so you buy more.
The water hose in the gas tank is to sit in the bottom up to the suck pipe level. That way the owner is not storing gas he can't sell. If he miscalculates, you get to buy some of the water. When his tanks are filled up from the tanker, the water gets mixed up and you get to burn it, too. Even without water intentionally put in, all sorts of evil stuff lurks in the bottom of a tank.

Added to oxygenate ("Oxygenates are usually employed as gasoline additives to reduce carbon monoxide that is created during the burning of the fuel")gasoline. It used to be added only in the Spring and Summer months but is now in there through out the year.

My gas station owner told me alcohol is going to be required in all gas soon. Does anybody know anything about this?

just ran 4 tanks of E85. @ 2.99 a gal, through my wifes '06 1500 Chev crew cab 4x4 5.3 flex fuel engine. The four tanks averaged 12.1 mpg. On reg unleaded, at 3.79 a gal, it averages 16.5 mpgs around here. I'm all rural and highway driving with no city. Dollars per mile about the same but prefere reg unleaded as I don't have to refuel as often.

But with the e-10 there is no price break to offset the loss in fuel milage. You are just getting the shaft.
