Does anyone know if it would be better to go N, I-25 to W, I-40 or take I-10 to Phoenix then I-17 north? I mapped it out and it`s wash on mileage and time. I`m leaning on the northern route because I`m thinking the western route will be super hot and not as visually pleasing. Not sure about the grades. Any advice?

I think you'll find taking I-25 to I-40 a much more scenic drive and it would be cooler.

By taking I-25 to 40 you can also avoid going through Phoenix, which can be a little difficult depending on what time you go through there. And, yes, I-40 is much more scenic. I love the red rock country around Gallup.

You can also avoid Albuquerque traffic by leaving I25 south of Albuquerque at Los Lunas. This route, now called Highway 6, is a section of historic Route 66 and intersects with I40 about 30 or 40 miles west of the city.

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping to come across a section of rt. 66 at some point. I think cooler sounds cooler.

If you like a scenic drive and not much traffic.

Take 1-25 north to Socorro N.M go west on 60 (be sure to stop in pie town for a piece of today's pie). Continue on 60 over to Eagar AZ.

At Eagar AZ take 180 up to Holbrook AZ(I-40). I-40 to Flagstaff.

Flagstaff has a portion of old route 66.
Also not far to Williams AZ another strip of old route 66.

Like Rug said and stop at the Very Large Array radio telescope if you have time.

I always take the more scenic route - I-10 to Deming, NM then US 180 North thru Silver City to Holbrook, Az. Then I-40 to Flag. Also more mountains but beautiful drive through the Ponderosas around Az/NM state line area.
