We were in Chama last year for 4 days and yes there is a grocery store just outside of town.
Not a mom & pop type, just a little bigger and their prices were in line with everybody else's.
Last winter disaster struck in Chama: The roof on the grocery store collapsed under extremely heavy snow load. Of course, they're trying to rebuild as quickly as they can; meanwhile, locals are having to drive up to Pagosa or over to Dulce for serious groceries.
If anybody has recent updates on the progress -- perhaps a temporary building? -- I'd appreciate hearing about it!
While Chama is gorgeous, I haven't had an update on the grocery store issue either. Road across the Jicarilla to Chama is way too rough so I have been making all business trips to Sante Fe by way of 550 down to I-25. I think I would really take a look at Pagosa if 'twer me. Not that far to either historic railroad, either Cumbres Toltec, or Durango Silverton. BTW, Durango Silverton RR is cheaper by far. Plus, Pagosa has the hotsprings pools, a dandy golf course at Pagosa Fairfield, good fishing, and access to really high country if you want to cool off (have been snowed on in the San Juans late July, and got snowed on last weekend over Molas Pass, just a shower).

We are currently in Moab and heading for Echo Basin RV park at Mesa Verde for two nites and it's only s'posed to get up into the mid 80's there. On Monday we're heading down to Ghost Ranch and will check the store in Chama on the way thru.Don't know if they have WiFi there but will try to let you know..
Eubanks,we're planning a day trip to Taos and to Chimayo while we're there,so we'll be in your area..There is a restaurant on the hiway from Espanola to Abiquiu and it's a new Mexican food type and has been there for over 50 years and I can't remember the name...It was on the left side heading left..

Boy, you got me on that one! Because of the way the valleys and mountain ranges run up here, we don't often get over into the area from Santa Fe/Espanola north through Abiquiu to Chama, so I'm kind of blind over there!
I FOUND IT....IT'S ANGELINA'S and it's wonderful still......Forgot to check the store in Chama,but since I turned the wrong way on the way to Ghost Ranch on Monday,we had to turn around at the Co border and I didn't see any sign of a damaged store..Went thru today on the way to Buena Vista and looked again and everything looked OK. All the CG's seemed to be relatively full,so there was probably no problems..
I heard that they've completely torn down the old store so that they can start from scratch. In truth, they probably needed to since the old structure was obviously not capable of handling the snow loads we've seen recently. Heaven knows that if our store up here were to collapse, the whole valley would be in really deep doo-doo: Trapped in snowy, snowy wonderland with no source of food within over 20 miles of mountains.
