LDF2307 and tatest; Thanks for the lesson.

The Marathons are 6 ply without a "PR". Is it wrong to look for the highest Ply Rating instead of just the number of plies?

Charlie D, I think the best thing to look for is load range & weight capacity. Then read lots of reviews. larryfs, mine were made in Canada. I don't believe the Canadian ones have as bad a rap, but still not great quality. Just keep your eye on them. It seems if you get more than a few thousand miles out of them w/out any problems you should be fine. Pay special attention to where the sidewall meets the tread.

6 ply rating for example, is a tire that the sidewalls (carcass) are the same strength as 6 full plies. Our modern tires are 2 ply sidewalls but those plies get heavier/thicker as the ply ratings go up. The 2 ply in the sidewall of a 10 ply rated load range E tire are much thicker/heavier than the 2 plies in a load range C tire. Look at a 22.5" semi truck tire usually has just 5 ply sidewall but they have a 16 ply rating. BUT those 5 plies are very heavy. The industry changed to the ply equivalent system many years ago as a tire with actual 10 plies ran very hot with all those plies flexing at speed when loaded. Our newer 10 ply rated tires are just as strong but run much cooler which adds much better long term reliability.

My truck came with Goodyear. The first year I had two failures that Goodyear did not cover-said it was road damage. The second year a bubble appeared on a sidewall where I could see it. Again Goodyear dealer said that was OK not to worry. I went to dealer and had a new set of Michelins installed. Over the years I have had several problems with Goodyear tires. Never again on anything.

As I said earlier, I had 3 Canadian GY on the ground and 1 Chinese. All have the same mileage approx. 7500 miles. The Chinese threw the tread and it wrapped around the brake drum. The Canadian tires still look good. I check them every stop-about 2 hours- and check the temps. Never above 112 deg F or so. I don't drive over 60 but find it creeping to 65 sometimes. Check inflation @ 65 cold before going anywhere's.

I will see what a GY dealer in Delaware says tomorrow.

I'm a tire salesman and tire/service center assistant manager. We don't carry the Goodyear line. I just bought three Wrangler A/P's to match my OE spare when I hit 78,000 mile on the original set for my truck. All I did was rotate them and keep the pressure up. Still haven't had an alignment. My TT came with 4ply rated (Load Range B) Canadian Marathons. It's an 04. I'm getting same size load range C's this winter, same brand and model with the white letter sidewalls. I'm sure they will be Chinese. I'll check their runout etc with the road force balancer and report.
I'm going to get the white letter sidewalls to make the wife mad! She says I am too fancy with cars and mechanical stuff. I don't think I'm too fancy, just matched.
