Just wait to see what the prices for 2009 models will be. I heard the other day that Toyota was hit with a 28% increase in the price of steel.

The rising price of raw materials will hit all carmakers. The steel contracts (negotiated years ago at much lower rates) are coming due in the next year or so for most carmakers. And the price of new vehicles may rise 25% or more because of it.

All carmakers need to significantly raise their prices to cover rising costs (materials and transportation), but none wants to be the first to do it. Once you see GM or Toyota raise their prices, the rest will follow suit.

What facts are there to support that top management "greed" is the issue?
When you have a business, you work to maximize profit. Period. The free market survives because of this profit drive.
Do you suppose that decades of unbrittled union "greed" could have anything to do with costs? Do those who have been successful automatically owe something to the rest? If the price isn't right, one is free to purchase elsewhere.

Read the paper from banks to the big three. Management is ruining more big business than just the big three.
The free market is free to survive or just as free to spiral into recession or worse. You can't cut out your back bone to feed your bloated head.
Union greed? You mean it's ok for top management to want the most they can get for their contribution but union employees should offer to work for substandard wages? Everyone is greedy. That's life. Do those of us who went to trade and technical school and continue to do so while making money for the company on the front line while earning a livable wage "owe" something to those of self admiring status at the top? No. We want a livable wage like anyone else for our services. What is "unbrittled"? I'm not college educated so it's a little above my vocabulary.
What does price have to do with it? A non-union over hyped and over priced Lexus costs far more than a very reasonably priced, very reliable union made Impala but, the Lexus is "in vogue" while the Impala is "lame". That's not due to union labor. That's management's design and marketing failure. So keep cutting wages to the folks who typically buy pickup trucks and Impala's in order to push more wealth to the top where the self admiring crowd typically buys Mercedes and Lexus sedans and then keep wondering where your profits are going.

I spoke with my cousin yesterday that is a manager at a dealership in Texas that sales Ford, Dodge, and GM out of the same building which you do not see very often. But he said that they have not sold a new diesel truck of any make in 60 days and they are in the hill country, lots of farms and ranches in this area.

Here in the heart of Texas this is not the case. New Diesels are sold everyday and you see them everywhere. Texans will never stop buying these beasts no matter what. They have and always will. If you can afford a King Ranch you can afford the fuel.

On ebay today a dealer in Missouri is selling a new F150 for $12,000.00. Sure it's a six cylinder with manual transmission but it has air. Claims to have 150 F150's in stock. He had about 30 built this way or for a grand more you can get an automatic. Also claimed to sell 500 to 600 cars and trucks a month.

I pick up a 2009 Dodge Diesel next week? I think you have a problem with ratio to proportion. Will I drive my truck for 35% more than last year, YES

I don't need a new truck, my pickup has 60 thousand miles, and I will drive it until I feel it is time, I don't care what
Geo down the street just bought. His won't be paid for anyway, all of mine are always paid for new or old.

With the deals on lightly used trucks and all the new diesel smog stuff I would not even consider a new truck right now. Anyone remember the first round of smog controls on the 1976 to 1982 vehicles? It nearly killed the drivability and noone seemed to be able to fix those cars as most just disconnected stuff.

And as SC said most don't need a new vehicle but they were just getting something new every time they flipped a house on a subprime mortgage.

GM annouced yesterday that they are increasing prices by 3% for 2009, go figure ?

Maybe with falling sales and everyting else costing more might have something to do with their price increase.
