Remco Towing, the company whose products and service have earned our trust and loyalty for years has decided to distance themselves from its customer community. They no longer sell direct to customers - you must buy from selected dealers. They no longer have an exchange program. If you buy a new toad, you also buy a new drive shaft disconnect and dispose of the old one any way you can. They no longer give previous customers any type of incentive. If you are a do-it-yourself individual you may have trouble with the dealer who insists on making the big bucks for installation - or forego the warranty or even the sale.
Remco Towing's website is out of date. For example, it states that Remco still offers an exchange program which isn't correct. If you are considering a Remco Towing product, especially if you are doing your own work, check out your situation. For me the nearest dealer is over 100 miles away and will not sell a product without doing the installation.
I verfied the above statements today by telephone with Remco Towing.

Thanks for the info. Just bought a new 2wd Silverado and was considering REMCO for a driveshaft disconnect. Have heard good things but if they are changing how they deal with customers, I think I'll try to locate a car trailer instead. Probably be cheaper than to buy and pay a dealer to install. I was gonna do it myself--doesn't look all that hard.

From what I have read about that company and its skill in abandoning customers with problems, I wouldn't touch one of their products...period!

I have had three of their drive shaft disconnects and the product is great. What is the typical replacement product for a drive shaft disconnect?

I did not question Remco about anything specific except the drive shaft disconnect. But, the rep on the phone said, "Our products are no longer available direct..." So, it is safe to assume that they mean all products.
As for other items to take the place of a drive shaft disconnect, other than Remco, I'm at a loss, too.
For what it is worth, I'm writing to the company president to express my disappointment. Should anyone else be interested, you can send mail to:

I am sorry to hear about this dumb decision by Remco. I have had a disconnect installed at the factory and although they were slow they do have all the parts in stock. Very few of their dealers carry much in inventory. Many of the so called dealers are not mechanical shops but rather RV dealers. Their staff are not certified mechanics. Perhpas we should start a thread of happy cistomers who had a Remco dealer install their products. Then we would know were to go for good service. I know that Tucson Driveshaft Service are very capable. They install all of the Remco products. BUT they do not carry much in the way of spare parts.

I suspect the reason they don't sell direct is the possiblity of installation problems. They may be attempting to reduce the number of troubleshooting and problem resolution calls they get. While not a difficult installation there are several areas to get in trouble during the installation and I suspect a good number of shade tree mechanics self install and don't really know and understand driveline and potential problems. I was going to install the disconnect myself until I found a local shop (Remco dealer) that would do it for $250. When I had the disconnect installed it had a driveshaft vibration. The installing dealer (transmission shop) thought the problem was with the Remco driveshaft (back half of 2 piece drive shaft) Remco sent a replacement out FEDEX. Some of the vibration went away which Remco said the entire driveshaft should be balanced. That solved the problem. I thought the support from Remco was excellent, they were in constant contact with the installer in an effort to solve the vibration problem. The only complaint I had was nowhere in the documentation or on their website did they say that balancing would probably be required for 2 piece shafts. Local drive shaft shop said balancing the entire driveshaft is a must. Failure to do so will typically result in seal or bearing failure, usually at the transmission end and/or mid-shaft carrier bearing.
So, I suspect Remco may be trying to minimize drive shaft installation problems or limit the number of individuals involved when a problem does happen. That, of course, assumes you buy from a dealer that gives a damn.

I spoke with Remco this a.m. and they are no longer doing installations as well. However Camping World in Council Bluffs is set up to do the installation. Apparently the mechanic who worked for Remco is now at CW. Remco sends over the necessary parts as required for the installation. Better than nothing.

Remco claims to bringing all their dealers in for "training". It is my bet that it is more sales oriented than mechanical.
