i hav e a 2008 chevy duramax with 1400 mi the the towing mileage is terrible approx 6 with 8000lbs the thing purges the exhaust filter every 400 miles by dumping raw fuel into the pipe it fills the cab with smoke and you can see the fuel gage drop. gm says this normal and wont even look at it

Sounds like a computer programming issue to me.
Agree with others, time for new dealer service department.

Is it possible that you may have a very heavy right foot? Even so, if this was normal there would be no Duramax engines on the market. Tell your dealer you were born at night, but not last night. You should be getting 12 MPG plus on the highway, with no smoke.

My towing mileage with a 13k 5ver is 11 mpg on the flat ground, and about 8-9 in mountains. The DPF does regenerate about once a tank full. However, it should not fill the cab with smoke. I occasionally get an exhaust smell but no visible smoke.

Not normal!  I love my Duramax! Mileage improves when you get a few more miles on the rig. Regeneration of the DPF should not produce any smoke...least I have never seen any in 6000 miles.

With a little over 11k miles now I have NEVER seen any smoke. I smell the regen once in while but NEVER see smoke. Mileage is about 13 towing and 18 hwy with no load and a light foot. Resist the urge to blow the doors off most other cars, it kills the mpg. Just because you can does not mean you should... even if it is fun.
When towing, I keep it under 65... and I should only go 55 in Kalifornia. When not towing I tend to go faster. 
If you are getting 6 mpg I think I would have it checked. If you see smoke on a stock 2008 I would really have it checked. Soon!!
