Seems like the 395 would be shorter, and maybe even faster? Is that true or is going back to the 5 better?
Thanks in advance for your insight!

Why are you in a hurry? US 395 is the way to go in any event, from Lassen. Enjoy the ride

According to the Trailer Life Campground navigator here are 3 choices:
Via Hwy 50 to I-5 total miles 272 time 4:43 avg mph 58
Via 395 212 3:54 54
Via 89 181 3:46 48
On paper 395 looks like the best overall bet. I assume you are looking for the easiest route, if so HWY 50 to I-5 would be the route.
Mileage will very based on actual starting and ending locations.
Have fun whichever route you take.

I would choose 89, it's the shortest and avoids all the big cities. It also stays in the mountains without major climbs. There is a modest climb on 89 as it heads south out of Sierraville, but south of Truckee it follows the Tahoe outlet river. You will encounter greater climbs near Lassen, and any other routes to from Tahoe.
US395 is divided highway leading into Reno, crossing high desert. Then you have to climb to Tahoe on either US50 or 431. I5 requires that you drop all the way to the Central Valley, and then climb back up on I80. Then you still have to take 89 or 267 from Truckee.

I have to agree with PaulJ. Hwy 89 passes through Lassen NP and around the west side of Lake Tahoe. Hwy 89 would be my first choice if not in a hurry. Second choice would be Hwy 395. Last choice would be I-5.

I forgot about the west side of Lake Tahoe. It is curvy, with ups and downs as it winds along the shore of the lake - and very busy the last time I drove it. North side is quite urbanized. I haven't driven the SE shore.

89 is a nice drive and south of Lassen it shouldn't have much in terms of grades.
If you are heading to South Lake Tahoe, be sure to take the route along the Nevada side as 89 in Zephyr Cove can be very interesting in an RV.
395 fun? What part? From Reno south you have all sorts of interesting stuff if you like traffic, messed up freeways, traffic controls, heavy traffic intersections and such things. North of Reno it is a nice drive, though.
If you take I5 be sure to get information on the road closures in Sacramento.

Actually, I'm not in a hurry. I guess I was assuming most folks would go back to the 5. 395 looked like a nicer drive.
Frankly, I hadn't even considered the 89, I guess I figured it would be all windy with lots of grades. Looks like it might be a nice alternative!!
Lots of good input, thanks so much guys!!

?? Zephyr Cove is on the Nevada side.
Looks like the area around Emerald Bay is the most 'interesting' part of 89 on the California side. I don't remember it specifically, but Google Maps shows a nice zig-zag on the south side of the bay as the road climbs over a ridge.
