We are going to Ocean Waves next Thrusday (7/03) for ten days. I was wandering how far I will have to drive to get to the nearest grocery store? Being an island I wouldn't think there are an abundance of grocery stores in the area.

Thanks;
Ross Unger

There is a Food Lion grocery in Avon about 15 miles south of you.

And the Food Lion is open 24 hours a day during season. Go early morning or late night as all other times the place is JAMMED!!! There is a Walmart north in Kill Devil Hills about 40 miles away. Maybe stop there for better prices on the way to Ocean Waves. We spent the summer of 2004 at Camp Hatteras, next door to Ocean Waves. Great location. Be sure to take day trips to check out the light houses. There is also a small ocean life saving museum within a mile of Ocean Waves. Go. It helps you to understand the unique life style on a barrier reef.

Bring them with you! Prices seem to be sky high this year. If you buy out here you are going to pay"beach prices" which are even higher on Hatteras Island. We do have a new Harris Teeter here in Kill Devil Hills that is really nice. The old Sea Mart in kitty Hawk is being tore down for a new Harris Teeter. The one in Nags Head has closed for good.

There are plenty of places to get supplies on Hatteras Island BUT I agree with the post re:taking as much of your own stuff as you can before you get there. You will pay incredibly high prices. Safe travels.

OWC does have a small store, but the Food Lion in Avon as mentioned above is only 15-20 minute drive down the road, it's big and well stocked...

There is a gas station/general store less than a mile from Ocean Waves they have just about everthing, I never paid attention to the prices, but with the price of fuel it might be cheaper to pick up odds and ends there.
