I'm not going to get into a "mine is bigger and better than yours" debate here.

If you are towing a larger fver I would want a dually.

The rear end is much larger ( Dana 80 in my F350 1 ton) and is stable as a rock when towing.

Those that say they can't tell a difference

(((haven't towed enough,)))

I,m on a roll here.

It's primarily about the pin weight...the dually can handle much more PW than can the srw. Sure, even the 3/4 will 'pull fine' but look at the cargo capacity of each truck.

(snip)

Are there any major, or important reasons for not towing with a SRW equipped with a locking differential?

Added info:
SRW truck I'm considering is a Silverado 3500, Crew cab, long bed Duramax.

5th wheel is 35 ft, about 14,000 lbs loaded.

Pin weight is about 2000 lbs.

I would suggest a locking differential. Personally I wouldn't be without one regardless of weight towed.
The 3500 SRW truck has a 6390 RAWR which will carry the pin weight. The trucks rear when empty will weigh 2800-2900 lbs (est) which leaves about 3500 lbs for its max payload. You can figure the truck allowable pin weight from that number.
A 2000 lb pin weight will fit in nicely with the 3500 SRW however as you know the actual road ready pin weight is usually higher. Stay under those axle and tire caps especially with any SRW truck.

I’ve pulled my Carriage that had a 2000 pin weight empty with both my dually and my 1 ton SRW that I had.

I couldn't tell the difference at all. Took the both into the mountains and the Interstate.

Now that I sold it all I don't have any reason to lie about one or the other. I liked the SRW 10 times better. It road better with less noise, better fuel mileage and handled better

I've towed my trailer with an F-250 Super Duty and Dodge Dually, both long box Extra Cabs 4x4's. Without a doubt I would take the dually any day over the SRW, no comparison IMHO.

I believe you ((( Florida )))camper.

2000lbs is not much of a load. A 3/4 ton can handle that a ok.

Mountain driving around hair pin turns....You can tell a difference.

2000 lbs pin wt on a 3500 srw is a Joke .I have 2800 lbs pin wt on my srw 3500.I put on 305/55/r20 e rated tires, 12.4 inches width of rubber ,talk about stable, over 10,000 miles pulling this set up in the mountains and in heavy wind.I really think that a good set up is one of the main keys to a Relaxing pull. There is no question that a bigger TV than what is called for will do an awesome job ,setup would not be as critical.

I have a chance at a great deal on a new truck, equipped exactly as I have been looking for, except single rear wheels. It does have a positraction rear end.

I feel like I have let you down on my post here.

Sometimes I fall into the traps of discussing what is better, and that does not help you with your question. For that I am sorry.

Duramax makes a great truck. I have a 3/4 ton VAN....(Duramax). 19 mpg loaded. as I may have said all I do is pull loaded trailers every day since the early 1980's. (The mpg is without trailer.) And yes it is all set up to pull trailers. Many times I have had over 4,500 lbs in the back or more. I have overloaded almost all vehicles that I own.

The good deal on this truck should be weighed into your decision.

If I knew that I was not going to go with a bigger RV in the future , I would buy this truck.

You can handle the pin weight and the weight of the RV. There are extra things that you can do to be safe with this set up.

So your safety should be my first concern, and it is of my opinion that because you have experience and have asked the question you are some one with good sound thinking.

Britt

PS, could you let us know what you decide....Thanks,
