Does anyone have any suggestions for a nice place to camp in this area?

If you are looking for hook ups, Rivernook and Camp James are usually the leading candidates.

If you do a search "Kernville" you will get all kinds of info on Rivernook. Seems to be the favorite. Betsy.

Stayed at Rivernook and Camp James. We preferred Camp James. Both are good. The real feature is the river itself. If hookups are required, either place is great. If you want to boondock, there are several around Lake Isabella, and a little further up River toward the Sequoias.

Your responses are appreciated.

If you don't need hookups there are a few state campgrounds North of Kernville on the river. We stayed at Headquarters state campground last Thanksgiving about four miles up from Kernville. We are going again this year at Thanksgiving. It is right on the river, but no hookups. Great fishing right from the shore.

Rivernook is nice. It has a creek running through it that the kids loved to play in with their tubes. On the news this noon, they reported that 3 people died on the river this weekend in unrelated accidents and 250 dead in the last 50 years so please be careful. Its a lot of fun doing the Lickity-splits a couple times.

The campgrounds along the Kern are Sequoia National Forest campgrounds, not "state campgrounds". Check this www.forestcamping.com site page and click on the campgrounds listed under "Kernville"; the descriptions are useful:

We stayed at Tillie Creek on Lake Isabella last year. Dry camp but it has a dump station there. IMHO, Lake Isabella has to be one of the worst place I've been to. Dirty, muddy, windy, hot and did I mention dirty? Trash everywhere. This is one of the area that I'll never go back.
Sorry, didn't mean to spoil your plan but if you can, change your destination.
