I guess I have the only 8.1 with no piston slap. My 8.1 van sits for weeks at a time between startups and is as quiet as my Scion xB.
I had a kid at a taco bell drive thru tell me I needed to add oil to my brand new avalanche in 2002 cause it rattled so bad, I traded it with 25k on it. Piston slap is and has been an issue with GM's since they replaced the 350 and 454.

your 8.1 could never do wrong anyhow sits for weeks but tows all the time with bogus mileage reports?..outpulls a diesel, never slaps(BS) and is worth more than a new caddy. The slapping is a common issue with the gen 3 gm gassers, and always will be. mine pulled great without an issue for tons of miles. Resale is a huge killer though, keep it and you will be OK, they run like crazy but selling them is a Mess! clickety clackety clock....
My '00 6.0 slaps with 110k miles, I had an '00 5.3 with 275k miles, slaps but never had any engine problems, had a '99 5.3 with 325k miles-no engine problems, have another '04 5.3 with 150k miles and no problems, an '05 with 125k miles-no problems, and lastly an '01 6.0 with 155k hard miles and no problems. They all slap, but all they still run good and most of those vehicles have led hard lives in the woods, mud, and towing everyday.
Some of the 350's had piston slap as well. I have one and it started at about 150K and hasn't gotten any worse. The thing is is on mine in the winter it sounds like the pistons are going to come through the block until the engine actually warms up. The truck now has 258K on it and the pistons are still in it and it still rattles until warm and then it is quiet.

Your brain is clickety clackety . I am down in Florida with it and it runs perfect.
Can anyone here point out a bona fide published document indicating that 'piston slap' has been the cause of early engine demise in any of the Vortec engines sited (these engines with several billion owner-accumulated miles in play already)? I think not.
Use your truck, change the oil as indicated, and don't worry about the few minutes of noise till she's warmed up
