This is a tradgedy that should not of happened.I pulled a 20' TT with a durango for years and it was a handfull.I cannot imagine why I would think a 35' TT would be safe behind that mid-size SUV.

Every reference to it being a "5th wheel camper" comes as a direct quote from an eye witness. I get the impression that the eye-witness didn't know a TT from a 5er...thus the confusion. I believe that they were towing a 35'TT with an SUV, unfortunately, not the safest thing to attempt.

Regardless of the situation, this is an extremely heartbreaking story and our prayers and wishes go out to those two little girls and the rest of their family.

So many comedians.

Things like this should be posted so that the new guy that is getting ready to go buy the biggest TT he can afford(notice I didn't say the biggest TT his TV will tow),say a 35 fter behind a Dodge Durango, will think twice before he makes his decision.

While I will agree that there are most certainly people that will learn nothing from this. I can bet that over the life of this thread someone will and others will think about what they are towing and how they tow it.

Truly a tragedy. That said, why do these things get reported here on the Forum with such regularity? I think it is macabre that we need to get these things here so quickly.
What can be said about something like this? What do we learn?
Just a thought that has been moving around in my head for some time.

I've wondered about the fascination of some to post about accidents myself. When I questioned it in a previous post a few months back I was criticized. We don't post about car accidents or pick up accidents or even tractor trailer accidents. Why does everyone feel the need to do so just because a RV was involved? Nothing was or ever is learned or gained in anyway from these reports. Most of the time no one knows what happened or why yet they still feel the need to post that they saw the aftermath of it or had to stop for traffic for it. All this thread did was to show us all how a man possibly killed 2/3 of his family because he was towing too big of a trailer for his vehicle.

Precisely the reason for posting it. Way to many people here do not put the safety of their family and others as the first priority! Not a day goes by where you can't read about some nut here trying to do too much trailer with too little TV and getting plenty of people to agree with him.
in a way i agree as well. although it's a sad story it's a lesson. if the facts of this one hold true i would then put the question out there that what if instead of a semi he hits another family packed vehicle and more people are killed. this is a lesson to learn for all who want to enjoy this lifestyle safely. yes?

While some may feel different, it is of great importance to post these tragedies. Consider these posts thought "jogging" kind of like a speeding ticket. Think about your rig and setup. All can go just great for many miles causing a false sense of security. We all do this and a "wake up call" should be considered just that.

Check out how these posts evolve from how awful and sad this is to the poor setup that may have, did IMO, cause the accident. 35 feet long is a monster! A Durango was a poor choice of TV.

Also, never forget "man makes the RV, the RV does not make the man". 35 feet?? for a small family.....why??

No offense intended here but many RV'rs are an accident waiting to happen. Share the road, be RESPONSIBLE.

I agree with the previous post suggesting special licensing for RV'rs.....you can hurt (or worse) many with so much vehicle.

I think that 2oldman (who seems to be our "link archiver" here) should keep track of all these accident links.

Then, the next time someone starts babbling about how towing and weight limits don't apply to them and that it's perfectly okay to tow a 30 ft trailer with an S10 Blazer, 2oldman can post those links and let everyone else know that the guy is a total idiot.

80% rule, 80% rule, 80% rule! The best towing advise ever given on these forums.

OP here.
Of course the reported length of the trailer could also be wrong.
I subscribe to the paper reporting the mishap, I will post any followup which may clarify the issue.

It is very sad indeed.
I agree with T 18 in that there should be some kind of education for new owners of RV vehicles if they have never owned or towed one before.
Another thing Im wondering is if they bought the trailer from a RV dealer, why they were sold that large of a trailer if they informed the dealer what the tow vehicle was going to be?
I keep thinking that the trailer weighed almost as much as the Durango without anything in it.
I may be wrong.

wouldn't a 35 footer weigh even more than the durango??

Because this is an RV Forum...

to hopefully teach the new folks the risks involved if safety isn't first on your list...

also to show how being over weight can cause serious harm, not only to yourself but others...

because no matter how experienced a person may be driving a semi, city bus, large equipment, it's no excuse or justification for towing beyond the vehicles capacity...

anyone else want to throw in some reasons???

unfortunately this is a hard life lesson...and if one person learns from this, well then....
