My coach is 30 AMP. I can run both my AC units off the generator, but I can only run 1 at a time if I'm plugged into a 30 AMP outlet.

It's hot as hell, and the park managers says she has a 30 to 50 AMP adapter that would let me run both my units at the same time off the 50 AMP service. Is this so, or will it set the coach on fire?

Your coach will only draw up to 30 amps no matter what you are hooked to. The park power however may not be giving you 30 AMPS at the outlet you are plugged into. So maybe if you plug into the 50 amp with the dog bone , (that's what they are called) you might get more amperage. Since it drops the 50 to 30 in the dog bone you won't get to much, as it won't happen. Your system on the RV splits the power at the control panel into 20 amp, 15 amp and on down as the circuits require. The A/C's draw more power to start than they use after they are going, so start one at a time. The only way to check the power coming from the park outlet is with an AMP or multi meter. Good luck!

NOT TRUE, if you are talking about a
normal 30A/50A adapter. All that
thing does is tap ONE 50A supply
instead of the TWO available.
This WILL allow 50A to your
shore power cord, but your RV
will have a 30A breaker which
will trip if you try to run
more than 30A.

I have not heard of a unit with 2 a/c's using 30A service.

I'm going to get the adapter from the office and give it a try. I'll let you all know if I don't catch on fire.

I should tell you that the switch that prevents both AC units from running at once if it's plugged into shore power was disabled by a previous owner. I did try to run both on shore power before, but popped the park breaker. They did both run until then though. We'll see what happens this way.

Yes, use the adapter. It will work. You don't want all the technical jargon as to why, do you? Your coach will be safer with this than if you are trying to run it on a 30 amp service that is laboring to keep up. I install 600 amp residential services and smaller, I am helping you, not looking to pump my self esteem. Make sure that other electrical appliances are to a minimum 'cause those two A/C units need about 30amp to start. Keep cool !

RV's that have only 30 amp service and two AC's normally have a control that prevents both AC compressors from trying to -start- at the same time. Is it possible that the switch you refer to as having been disabled was for this purpose? If so, it would be good to have it working, since sooner or later they will try, and you will pop the breaker again. You won't set anything on fire, but you only have 30 amps available at your coach panel, and as noted, it can take nearly that much to start a compressor.
The virtue in connecting to the park's 50 amp service is that it may offer closer to the nominal 120 volts on a hot day when everyone in the park is running his AC, most of them on the 30 amp service and pulling its voltage down to some low value. If higher voltage is available, your AC's will draw fewer amps.

Sometimes the 30 amp park outlets are worn out and cause excessive voltage drop.

Plugging into the 50 amp outlet, with an adapter, might yield better results.

I know my big coach will run two ac's on a good 30 amp service.

Call me if you wish.

The adapter the park manager has won't help.. Here is why

Currently if you try to run both A/C units you trip the park breaker (I'm guessing) if you use the 30-50 amp adapter you won't trip the park breaker

But the very first thing the power cord comes to is... An automatic transfer switch, rated at 30 amps.. And the very next thing is.. Another 30 amp breaker

That WILL trip

So,,, What do you do? http://www.psrv.net

Two options..

1: Go there, study what's on the page, build you own,, Cost: Reasonable, Time, about 1 hour not counting the trip to the hardware store

2: Order one: Cost 90 bucks, Time 1-6 weeks for it to arrive

NOTE that the PSRV unit does contain a 2nd breaker.. My home made does not.
