We're staying a week in Bodega Bay. We had to stay a day somewhere so we made reservations at the Mendicino KOA up the coast on 1. Then we travel on to Ft Bragg for another week. Is the highway in that area safe for me to take my size rig, 30 ft fifth wheel, all the way up 1. Or should I cancel the KOA stay, go back to 101 and go up to Hwy 20 to Ft Bragg?

You'll be fine, it is slow. North of Ft. Bragg, or south of Bodega is where it gets rough.

Highway 1 from Bodega Bay to Mendocino is narrower and windier than Hwy 20. If I remember there are a number of switchbacks that are pretty tight. Although the scenery is terrific along the coast I would avoid the stress by using Hwy 101 and then cutting over onto Hwy 20 at Willits.
