I am curious. I had it pounded in my head early to never tow more than 1500 lbs or so with the OD on. Or really if it hunted for the right gear and was bouncing back from OD to 3rd to just lock-out OD.

On that note I read a lot of people asking about why wasn't this vehicle or that vehicle in OD and why is it revving so high? Is this no TOW in OD rule just a Dodge thing? (I learned it while on Dodge Forums) I would think nearly all transmissions are locked in OD therefore not able to slip and take pressure off the gear and the nature of OD makes it more fragile. I can see maybe and HD truck having an OD capable of handling it but not most of us with smaller TV's.

I learned the $$$ way in the Blazer with the 4L60 transmission if anything is hooked to the hitch to stay out of OD. After the last transmission in hilly two lane roads not towing I tend to stay in 3rd to reduce hunting and shifting.

With the MH with the 4L80 GM transmission I tend to stay out of OD if any degree of TC lock up is hunting or the transmission is changing gears very often because a MH is like fully loaded/same as towing where you have anything on the hitch or not.

I have yet to see any fuel savings from OD IF any hunting is going on with the transmission. We all ran one gear below OD not that long ago and did just find.

i believe running in OD wears out most automatic transmission befor there time when loaded or towing something ,a lot of the OD transmissions are rated way lower then the older 3 speeds were but they expect them to the same job as the 3 speed HD models.

My 06 F350 dually diesel with 4:10 rear pulling my 32' cedar creek does a fine job in overdrive with the tow haul. I weighed the rig and it is 19,900+ gross.

I tow a 10K trailer in OD all the time with my 01 Dodge CTD. With 4.10 gears I would be deaf if I didn't.

With my 98.5 Ram, Cummins powered, I Tow in OD all the time. But if entering parts of our country with mountains, or are rather hilly, the OD is off. My fiver is a Sunnybrook in the 10,000 # class.
You have to use common sense when towing in OD.

Unless my transmission is hunting for the right gear I use OD. Like DKean I have a 6.0 PSD (2006 E-350) with 4.10 but only towing a rig that is 7,600 gross. My TV performs almost like it's not even there.

With the newer fords you can't disengage the OD. Just push the tow/haul and let the tranny do it's job. OD will kick in at about 60mph.

I've got 2 overdrives and I don't have a problem with using either of them while towing.

As long as you don't let your transmission hunt for gears making it shift over and over and over, there shouldn't be a problem.
