I am planning a trip to Canada from the US. What kind of a hassel can I expect when I go into Canada at the border and also when I return to the US?

None. Have the proper ID. Check to make sure what you are carrying is legal. And most important, be honest when asked a question. I have been crossing for years and just did so twicw on an Alaska trip. Never any longer then 5 minutes.

Thousands of people make the trip every day. Those with Passports are preferred over those without. If you appear normal, and your business in coming to Canada is reasonable, you will likely come in in just a few seconds.

Do read the regulations on what you can bring with you, and answer the questions the border patrol asks truthfully. Keep you answers as brief as possible, and do not volunteer more information than asked.

If you have a criminal record, or want to bring a gun into Canada, you will not be permitted to enter.

Make sure you do not have any DUI convictions.

I did a search on DUI in this forum and found the following which I believe is correct.

Quote:

As to being "denied entry to Canada " it is not a mystery. If you have been convicted in the USA, of a felony criminal offence, that has not been pardoned, you will be denied entry. That DOES include DUI or drunk driving, because in Canada that is a Criminal Code offence, and we view it as a very serious offence. It is possible to apply for a " criminal waiver to enter Canada" BUT it is not a matter that can be done at the border, upon arrival. It takes a long process ( more than a year to complete ) and the services of a Canadian paralegal company to get it done. The costs are about $800 CDN. Previous posters have pointed out that the Canadian Government has a number of Consulate offices in the USA. Call the one nearest to your home and ask the question. Get the information direct from the source, and be informed properly. Jim Bunting. Toronto.

You can also be denied entry into the US, A Canadian citizen that is, if you have had a DUI in Canada and have not gone through the pardon procedure. Works both ways.

Do a search in this forum for "border crossing" and you will get a month's worth of reading. It has been discussed many, many times.

I've always wondered what they are looking at on their computers when they ask the question "have you ever been arrested" And if you did have a DUI 20yrs ago would the border agent be able to verify that fact if you just said no?
