My expierence tells me your plan will fail.

I tried 55 mph but checking the tach told me that I was in 5th gear,
mileage sucks in fifth gear. Check it out.
You must have 6th gear overdrive? I have a friend who has a new pickup that has a 6 speed transmission who tried the 55 mpg to save gas. He could not get into overdrive and did not save any gas. It cost him extra to run at 55.

Where did you ever see, hear or read about an accident because some rv was going 55mph in the right lane. Accidents happen from high speed. To believe you are at risk in the right lane doing 55mph is ridiculous.

The New York State Thruway or the Northway would be two for starters. Many rear end accidents on both those roads. Oh, I-80 thru Pennsylvania would be another and we must not forget I-95 anywhere north or south.

It seems like there is ways a some groups of slower traffic on I-24 so it looks like you could fine those groups and pass them and just stay a little in front of them?

I've tried 55 mph and my 5 spd Allison just rocks between 4th and 5th with the terrain and the fuel mileage drops considerably. My sweet spot seems to be 60 to 62 mph. 270 hp Cummin's and Allison 5 spd 23,000 mh and 3100 lb toad.

That is my experience as well with the ISB and 5 speed towing 5,000lbs. 55 is too slow (read RPM's) for my setup to maintain the hills.

Another point here is that you don't have to slow to 55. If you are a 70mph driver, slowing to 65 or 62 will definately save fuel.

I would take in consideration the safety factor traveling at 55 MPH on a 70 MPH interstate - with all the semis - that is a safety concern for me -

We have a 2007 Tradewinds with the Cummings ISL 400 and on a recent trip of over 2000 miles we slowed down from 70MPH to 55 and improved from 6.5 to 8.2 MPG. Most of the trip was on interstate roads on mostly flat lands in the midwest. Takes a bit to get use to going slower, but worth the savings.

I didn't ask about highways that had rear end collisions, which happens all the time. I said specifically the cause being an rv traveling 55mph in the right lane as the cause. I don't think so!

I agree.

Maybe he's saying that there are alot of really bad truck drivers in these areas.

We have rear end collisions around here too. But, according to a police buddy, they are always the fault of the person in the rear because you are responsible for allowing a SAFE following distance under ANY circumstances. If your eyesight is so bad that you can't see an 8 ft wide by 12 ft tall motorhome on the road in front of you, please get off the road because you definitely won't see any cars on the road and will end up killing everyone.

Here in WA the minimum on the Interstate is 45 (as I remember), so it's legal. If someone hits you it's THEIR FAULT. Remember overtaking traffic DOES NOT have the right of way, they have to adjust their speed to pass safely. If they don't like it TOO BAD!!

And Joe trolls again? Starting to notice a lot of people running a lot less than 65-70 on the Interstate as well as US highways. Ran 60 MPH coming into work on a US highway this morning and did NOT have one person pass. Some will justify burning up the roads any way they can.

We have a Cummins 325 HP in our 2004.5 Dodge 2500 with a 4.10. In 3 years of fulltiming, 65,000 miles we learned that at 1700 RPM pulling our 11,000 5th wheel we get 14 MPG on the interstates in the east. We learned that at 70 we can not get 11 MPG.

Incidentally, we have never felt threatened by people passing us. We use the right lane and if we get there later or tomorrow thats OK.

Just our opinion, but at $4.50 diesel we save $75.00 per 1000 miles.
