I agree it sounds strange. In a gas engine the vaccum one pulls does effect MPH. A lugging engine turning a lower RPM does not mean any less gas is going into the engine but that it goes out the tail pipe without pushing the rig. Engines do have a happy spot.

I will not believe that running in 5th gear will increase the fuel mileage. That might be possible if one would change the differential gear ratio. Or running a gasoline rig, Or even if you are underpowered and running at full throttle
It's certainly possible in a gas engine as you say, not possible under normal driving conditions in a diesel. In a diesel engine, lugging is good for fuel consumption - in a gas engine it's bad.

If you want to figure your true cost or savings your need to figure the fuel in Gallons Per Hour.
You save a little going slower but it takes you longer to get there. You're not saving as much as you think.

Your not flying an airplane, your driving a MH or truck. MPG is directly related to number of miles driven divided by amount of fuel consumed. 1000 miles driven at 10 MPG equals 100 gallons of fuel used. The same 1000 miles at 15 MPG equals 66.67 gallons.
For the record we get 14 MPG pulling our 5th wheel at 58 MPH. At 70 we get 11 MPG. At 4.50 per gallon for diesel we save $75.00 in 1000 miles. That buys us an additional 16 gallons of fuel from the savings we get by slowing down.

Then fly!! It seems to me that with the fuel prices where they are attempting to travel fast in a motorhome just doesn't seem to make sense if your time is that important! I'm not really attempting to flame you or such. For some people out there, the fuel price doesn't matter, but for some of us, we have to make some adjustments.
We had a sailboat for 25 years, and fortunately, we had the time during the summer that we could enjoy the wind and the journey and not have to worry about "making time." We preferred to anchor out rather than stay in a marina anyway. Guess that's why we like boondocking now!! I guess the sobs are just catching up to me for all that free wind I was able to use!!
Please, I'm really not trying to flame you!!

LOL, that's like the lady caught speeding
Cops asked why she was speeding and she replied that she was running out of gas and was speeding to get to the gas station before she ran out!

You're right. It was my time that was worth more then the savings.Sorry, I was distracted when I posted that.
