Audio recorders are relatively cheap. Asking the neighbors is even cheaper.

Pretending to leave (including the slamming of car doors and having the spouse drive off) and hanging around for a few minutes is a good indication of whether the dogs will bark while you're gone. As is sneaking up on them when you return--spouse let's you out at the campground entrance, or far enough away from the RV that the dogs don't recognize the sound of the car, and you sneak up on them to see if they're quiet.

These are only a few of the methods that conscientious owners use to make sure their pets are quiet.

Sounds like a really good policy to me.

This is true. A couple years ago we were in a KOA and some people left their dog in their trailer to go site seeing and it barked ALL day. When they arrived back at camp the KOA staff followed them to their trailer and asked them to leave due to their not following the pet policy. They were certain that it was not their dog barking and were very insistant on making that point, however, half the campground disaggreed. They were upset because it was the first day of the Memorial Day Weekend and they didn't want to leave. The county Sheriff was called to help them change their mind and leave after they got extremely rude with the KOA staff. I personally think this policy should be enforced more often. Mike.

Easy.... do like we did:

We were curious as to our pets behaviour, even though other campers always said they never made a peep when left alone inside.... we turn up a radio inside to mask outside sounds and pull down all the blinds so nothing entices them to be looking out the window.

So set up our video camera inside our rig and left it for two hours... not a peep outta our dogs. They slept almost all the while, and one got up, got a few laps of water, and went back to sleep. All we had on our tape was sleeping quiet dogs!

We always leave our dogs in the motorhome, and we invested in an automatic starter for the generator in case there's a power failure. Our Japanese Chin and our Maltese do not bark, they're properly bred and trained.
We've never been to a place where pets are not allowed, and we never ask if we can leave them alone in the motorhome,....we just do it.

I have no beef with any camp's policies, although I do have problems when they are not clearly communicated. What I really have a problem with though are policies that are not enforced or where the management leaves enforcement up to the campers. Those are the camp I avoid or leave.

No problems here...what bothers me more is when someone doesn't clean up after their pet. Also Parks that are prejudice against certain breeds.

It never fails when walking the Baby (80 lb Pit who is always leased when in public areas) minding our business when we pass a rig that has a 5 lb dog who is barking and being aggressive. But, everyone sees this dog as being cute.

No problems with Harlee she's a female Lab.

12 replies and stouffer was the first one to get it right. The topic is not dogs barking...its lack of clear communication of policy. Gotta love the emotional dog threads.

What about parks that have a no pet policy and you own a cat. I've never been bothered by a howling cat yet but suppose there is the odd one around. Most cats are content to sleep when left alone.

Another thing that irks me is because we travel with a cat, we are restricted to the pet area in some parks. This means we are often stuck between people with dogs and this is stressful for a cat who loves to go outside on a leash. You have to watch the cat continually because some dog owners still think it is OK to let their dog run loose. Personally I feel restrictions should apply to dog owners as opposed to pet owners.
I have yet to come across a c.g. that had a "cat only" area.
