I'm picking up my new Ram 3500 Diesel tomorrow from Dave Smith in ID, I've been told by several people to use a K&N air filter as it lets in more air and that this is a good thing...then a guy I know who drives an 18 wheeler says..NO!! bad things, lets in too much particulates and will trash my new eng....
So...what's the word from those of you who have really used a K&N...does it help? with power and fuel usage?

Tripwire I was considering doing that for my 454 and someone posted in a thread that you had to get over like 5K RPM for my engine to stave for air. I do know they let more dirt get in because you have to make the hole bigger to suck more air.

I can personally attest to the K&N letting in more dirt. I used to run K&N's on my ATV's, untill one day I took apart the carb on one of them and saw all the DIRT inside it. Since removing all K&N and replacing with stock oil/foam filter elements, the intakes and carbs are much cleaner and I didn't notice any decrease in performance. I never noticed an increase in performance after installing the K&N either.
I will never run a K&N on anything ever again.
Also, the more you wash the K&N (and you are supposed to wash them!), the more the gauze element deteriorates and the more dirt it flows.
K&N flows more air? Yes
K&N flows more dirt? OH YES!

To gain any horse power by adding a K&N on an ATV you also need to re-jet the carb.
ATV's have a tendency to go lean running a K&N and can actually lose you HP, installing a bigger jet a long with a K&N should have netted a small increase in HP.
Personally I would never put one on an ATV, they do let in way too much dirt.

my son the Nascar driver says that by letting in more air you also take the chance of letting in more dust partials. Thus you will have to rebuild your engine sooner than you may want to. Now race cars are different, they tear the engines down all the time or put in new ones, so running a K&N in a race car would be alright. Your money, your decision.

Here's some real test data that's been out there for a while. The numbers seen here should help you make a decision about your filtering options.

Mechanic at a Dodge dealer told me Cummins told them at a seminar that these type filters are "engine killers" and may void your warranty. I took mine off and saw absolutely no difference in mpg or power.

lots of good aftermarket equipment that works that Dodge doesn't use but that certainly doesn't mean its doesn't work. Cummins web site at one time had a advisory of not using the K&N drop in OEM type of filter because it didn't meet Cummins filtration specs. K&N does have a filter (filter charger ?) that does meet the Cummins filtration specs. There are also several aftermarket filter products such as the AFE Pro Guard that is very popular with Dodge/Cummins owners and operators. I would advise you to look in on dieseltruckresource.com web for more input. One thing you will learn when asking advise is listen to all replies not just from a couple. The more heads the more info. Also look at genosgarage.comfor more info on the AFE filter and all your filter needs. There are several other good after market air filter out there that meet Cummins filtration specs and also help with lowering EGT temps.
