I have run the K&N filter on my real truck for about 140,000 miles out of a total of 172,000 miles. I use an oil analysis program on my engine, and have only had one report of slightly higher silicon. That was due to not properly seating the K&N after cleaning the filter - my bad. Your experience/use may vary, but not all folks are unhappy with K&N.

save you money and get one of those mega size exhaust pipe extensions.
I WOULD recommend a K&N for someone I really don't like.

They were great back in the 70's ,when we didn't know better. Also I'd forget running a programmer too, unless you want to be your own warranty center. My buddy bought a programmer for his Duramax, now he doesn't really like the way it operates his tow/haul mode, so he took it out, but he probably already kissed his engine warranty good bye if it left a footprint. These trucks can already pull a house of it's foundation, why more power?

I have used them on a number of different vehicles and when installed properly, they work fine. I have also done oil analysis which have showed just that. Science and chemistry trumps old wives tales and internet rumors.

I would never use a K&N filter on a turbo-diesel and use a stock AC Delco air filter on my 8.1 van. I use a K&N oil filter on my 8.1 because it's a great oil filter with 1" nut welded to the bottom that makes it easy to put on and take off. I did have a Gale Banks Stage III setup with SS headers and K&N ram air setup on my 34ft MH that worked great but that was a 7.4 big block. On my 7.3 & 6.0 PSD's I used stock air filters.

I run them on several vehicles (including my truck)...never had any problems, and the one in my Caddy has over 100K. On some vehicles, it makes a noticeable power increace (my Caddy is one).

Tripwire wrote: I'm picking up my new Ram 3500 Diesel tomorrow from Dave Smith in ID, I've been told by several people to use a K&N air filter as it lets in more air and that this is a good thing...then a guy I know who drives an 18 wheeler says..NO!! bad things, lets in too much particulates and will trash my new eng....
So...what's the word from those of you who have really used a K&N...does it help? with power and fuel usage?

Based on everything I have read for the past 7 years on Ford diesel sites, I would pass on putting a K&N on a diesel. I do run the Amsoil foam filters on my Van, but I also do an OA every oil change and so far they have done a great job.

On a normally aspirated vehicle it may be an advantage. My Tahoe got a noticable gain in MPG with a K&N. But when you have a turbo cramming air into the motor, the filter doesn't really matter.
Your limitations are probably going to be the intake itself and the exhaust. A buddy I know just had his turbo get louder with a new air-box replacement, but what really helped was a 5" exhaust.

You should do EXACTLY what the people who designed and built your engine say to do. And that does not include a K&N air filter. Lets think about it....if it did all it claims to do, don't you think it would already be on your truck???
