My laptop is about 4 years old, and takes forever to boot-up. Someone referred to it as "gunked-up". Any advice on how to make it run faster, as it used to?

Back up your data, settings and programs, reformat and reinstall. Sometimes you've got to just clean house.

Run a disk cleanup lately? How about temporary internet files? Check my computer, C:, properties and see how full your drive is.
you can also Google 'computer slow boot' and find a ton of other ideas. I doubt "gunk" is the correct word.. lol

Have you cleaned out your cookies and temporary Internet files lately? You need to do that once a month or so.
To do that, go to Start, Control Panel, Internet Options. Under General, Browsing History, select “delete”. In the next window select “delete all”. A side window will show up, and check the box “Also Delete…..” and “Yes” in this box. Then click OK. If the delete process takes 10 seconds or so, you had nothing to worry about. If it took 30 seconds, it was slowing down your computer a little. If it took a minute or more, you're going to notice quite a difference in your computer’s speed. You will have to re-enter your passwords to Internet sites, so have them written down. Your “favorites” wont go away and will still be there. All of your programs will still be there. All of your data, letters and photos will still be there.
Finally, install AVG 8.0 and Zone Alarm. Both are free.

Sometimes when you install a new program they also install a lot of add ons that you probably don't want or need (Intuit programs are notorious about this). There is a program called decrapifier that works really well to clean out all those unnecessary add ons. Just google it and follow the tracks. Hope this helps.

Another thought. Check your RAM. Some of the lower end computers come out with 256 RAM and that is absolutely criminal. 512 is better but I look at 1 gig as a minimum on RAM.

go into "msconfig" (Start -> Run) and click on start up. Disable any programs not needed on start up. Look up "AUTORUNS" for needed and un needed start up applications. And excellent site to see whats running on your computer File Research Center
I second the use of CCleaner
also recommend:
Privacy Eraser Pro
Super Cleaner
Easy Cleaner
Then Page Defrag
Suggest you check for Viruses or trojan & Backdoor programs with
Malwarebytes (Anti-Malware finder)
Super AntiSpyware Free Version
Both MalwareBytes & Super AntiSpyware have FREE versions that work much better than Ad-Aware & Spybot
Then use
PC Decrapifier to get rid of "Bloat Ware" PC manufactures install (Like 30 trial versions of AOL &******like that)
Then go to Bleeping Computer.com download "Hijack This" run Hijack This and post the results on the Bleeping computer forum for a Expert to inspect and tell you what to remove and how to remove other problems.
Your computer will run better than new!

There are a few ways to learn more about your computer and how things work and thereby increasing your computer awareness.
1. back up your data and reinstall. You will soon learn which programs you forgot you used, which codes you don't have for the ones you remembered, settings you forgot about and how you set things in the first place.
2 G et a registry cleaner. This will show you many items that can be deleted from the registry. You can do that and the next thing you find out is that you will have to do number 1 above or at the very least, do a system restore because some entries where necessary. Then you will find out that cleaning the registry will do very little for start up speed.
3, Get a few of the free programs that will clean out useless files such as Tmp, internet cache, junk left over from installs etc, show you which programs start up at boot time and which ones you don't really need than such as picture, music, printer, etc. which will start up when you need them anyway.
4. Do 3 and then get some more memory and make sure you have a reasonable amount of free disk space.
